MAMOU, La – The St. James Wildcats racked up 6 interceptions from 6 different players in route to a 53-14 second-round playoff victory on the road over the Mamou Demons.  The Wildcat defense created supreme havoc and the offense capitalized early by means of a 4-touchdown explosion in the first quarter.

St. James also used outstanding team discipline to their advantage as there were very few penalties and the Wildcats played sound football in all three phases of the game.  Very similar to last week, St. James played like a team who was focus on only their next opponent.

St. James took the ball to open the game and marched on a superb drive capping it off with a nice “second-effort” 8-yard run by Gary Davis.  Jaurelle Narcisse drilled the extra point to give the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead just 2 minutes and 13 seconds into the game.

The St. James defense, the 2006 version of the “Legion of Doom” defense, came up with a big play to get the Wildcat offense some great field position.  Terry Isom would come up with an interception.

A few plays later, Luther Ambrose took an 8-yard sweep play in for the score.  The extra point was good and St. James led 14-0 with 6:40 left in the first.

The Wildcats weren’t done with the first quarter.  Demel Dumas came up with a big interception and a nice return again set up excellent field position for the offense.

Luther Ambrose would score his second touchdown of the early evening when he took a counter play 22 yards for the score.  The point after was good and St. James led 21-0 with 3:58 left in the first.

After St. James forced Mamou to a bad punt, the Wildcat offense wasted no time as Antonio Phillips found Craig Duronslet for a 26-yard touchdown pass.  The point after was no good and St. James led 27-0 with 1:53 left in the first quarter.

A Wildcat interception and great return by Marcus Dumas set up the next score.  Jaurelle Narcisse powered his way in on a 3-yard run.  The extra point was no good and St. James led 33-0 with 8:27 left in the first half.

Mamou was finally able to score and it would come off of a 48-yard run with 6:48 left in the first half.  With a good extra point, the score was now 33-7.

The Wildcat defense came up with yet another interception, this time from Craig Duronslet.  A few plays later, Antonio Phillips hit Terry Ison on a nice 10-yard bullet pass.  Narcisse’s extra point was good, and St. James led 40-7 with only 24 seconds left in the first half.

St. James’ next score would be from a 31-yard run by Gary Davis.  Romelle Steib’s extra point gave St. James a 47-7 lead with 8:59 left in the third quarter.

The St. James defense racked up another interception and this time, Jared Favorite took his return in for the Wildcat score.  The extra point was no good and St. James led 53-7 with 3:14 left in the third quarter.

Mamou would score one more time when #9 took in a 34-yard run.

Also, St. James would come up with a sixth interception by a sixth different player when Brad Phillips picked off a pass late in the game.

Final score: St. James wins 53-14.

NOTABLES

The football stadium at Mamou is right down the street from Freds Lounge, which is world renown as the “Cajun Music Capital of the World.”  The town of Mamou carries a rich history and a strong Mardi Gras tradition.

Again, complements go out to all the players for excellent team discipline.  Discipline is more than just attitude, it’s also preparation and execution, and the Wildcats were very solid in all those categories.

In his post-game speech to the players, Coach Gaille complemented the class shown by his team tonight.  He also stressed out that there is still room for improvement and that the team has still yet to ‘gel’ and play their best game.  Just like the previous two weeks, Coach Gaille again reminded his team on the importance of focusing only on your next opponent and no other team.

St. James will now begin preparation for their next opponent as they will take on the Vinton Lions (10-2) in the state quarterfinals.  The Wildcats will return home as the game will be at St. James next Friday night.  Remember, this will be the day after Thanksgiving and many of the great stories in Wildcat football history have taken place on that day.
