About Excision
Female Genital Mutilation
The tradition of female genital mutilation (FGM) or excision has been plaguing
women for thousands of years. These days it is practiced in more than 20
countries, mostly in Africa. During the last 20 years, Africans have started
resisting the practice and more and more are coming to see it as a violation
of the human rights of the girls and women. People have tried all kinds
of ways to convince parents to resist the pressure of custom and put the
interests of their girls first.
This album is one such way. The artists who sing here are very well
known in Mali, and our hope is that listening to these songs, and singing
these songs, will make it easier for Malians and other West Africans to
let go of a part of their tradition that is not good for their girls.
Let's Stop Excising!
The following African countries have outlawed excision: Burkina Faso, the
Ivory Coast, Senegal, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Ghana, Egypt,
Kenya, Niger and Liberia.
Why
not Mali?
Mali is one of the countries that set the tone for West Africa. It is
therefore well-placed to lead the way in abandoning the practice of excision.
We at the STOP Excision project think that Mali, and all the other practicing
countries with no laws, should pass them.
