Chapter Seven

I breathed in deeply and inhaled the scent of Mum making eggs. She smiled at me from her place by the stove. I smiled back. I glanced across the table at Scott. The vision of him was fuzzy, but I could tell he was smiling. ...But why in the world would he be up out of bed before noon? Oh well. I looked back at Mum. She got this really scared look on her face and dropped the pan that had the eggs in it. I opened my eyes with a start. I was breathing heavily and I was freezing cold. I blinked my eyes to try and force them to adjust. Slowly, the cave took formation. Next to me lay a sleeping Scott. Just like him to be sleeping in in these situations. I moved away from him and slowly stood. My knees cracked as I stood and I winced as I tried to step forward. My feet were asleep and the pain felt 10 times less bearable than it would in regular conditions.
Scott began to slowly wake. I turned my attention toward him. He opened his eyes and sleepily smiled hello. I looked out the cave opening. It was morning, but early, I could tell. My non-water proof watch was broken now. Scott stood and joined me. "Sore?" I asked, looking over at him. He nodded and winced. "That's what cold weather will do to you."
"I dreamt of Mum," Scott told me, scratching his head.
"So did I," I faced him.
"She was cooking breakfast. Eggs." He stopped and smiled. "You were sitting at the table with me. But I looked over at Mum..."
"...and she got this creepy look on her face and dropped the pan." I finished for him.
"Yeah, how'd you know?" Scott frowned.
"I had the same dream," I told him. He nodded. This had happened a couple of times before, but only when we were sleeping in the same room or near each other. It was strange.
"I guess we're kind of hungry," Scott smirked. I laughed.
"So what's on today's agenda?" I asked, turning my attention back toward the opening to the cave.
"I thought we'd start out with a bit of skiing, then rest for a bit, check out the scenry, et cetera, et cetera."  he smiled.
"Sounds nice." I said. "But what are we
really doing?"
"Well," he thought. "I figure they are already looking for us, so all we can really do is make sure the entrance to the cave there," he pointed, "is clear at all times." I nodded and sighed, leaning against him. This was going to be a long day.
