Chapter Eight

I sat by the opening of the cave all day long, just waiting for someone to come and take us somewhere. Anywhere. I was half praying for a psycho kidnapper to come and snatch us up. At least his runaway van would be warmer than it was out here. It had to be. Scott just kind of paced around the cave, thinking. We were both pretty anxious to get out. "Don't you think we should go look for something to eat?" I asked sleepily.
"What's there to find?" Scott asked, facing me.
   "I don't know," I shrugged. "Maybe we'll get lucky."
"I don't think luck is on our side, sis," Scott said, joining me where I sat. "Ah, I'll go. I'll go out and look for something."
"You sure? I mean, you don't have to," I told him.
"No, I'm starving," Scott said, patting his stomach. I smiled at him.
   "Be careful," I told him.
"I will." He replied as he stood up. He left the cave and I watched him as he made his way down the mountain. It was starting to get dark and I hoped that he wouldn't get lost, or hurt, or anything like that.
I was beginning to worry when he hadn't come back in over an estimated hour. I began to take his place, pacing around the cave seeing frightful images in my mind of him falling and being injured and being left in the cold. I was about to go out after him when Scott finally emerged from the dark. I ran to him and embraced him in a tight hug. "Oh my god, you're okay," I said.
"I'm fine, I'm fine," Scott said. I let go and looked up at his face. His nose and ears were red from being out in the even colder. "I didn't find anything. Its all just...snow."
"Its okay," I told him. "We'll survive." He nodded. "You'll even survive longer than I will, you with that extra cracker and all." I joked. He laughed.
"Is this any time to be joking about my eating habits?" he blushed. I just smiled at him. "C'mon, lets try to get some sleep."

                                  ~*~*~*~*~

Two more days passed and no word from any one else. I knew Scott was thinking the same things I was. When were we going to get out of here? Were we going to get out? Were we going to die in here? Our clothes were still damp from being buried in the snow and they started to freeze days ago. Our bodies were permantly numb and tingly. One morning I awoke and found Scott suprisingly awake next to me. I smiled hello and started to get up.
"Wait," he said, touching my arm.
"What is it, Scott?" I said, looking back at him. He struggled to sit up and winced as he did.
"I can't feel my toes," he quietly said.
"Neither can I," I said, turning back to stand up. "It's just because of the cold."
"No," he shook his head. "It's...worse."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I think I have frostbite," he told me. I slumpled down next to him.
"Great," I muttered. I looked over at him. "There's nothing we can do unless we have some way to warm up. I'm sorry Scott." Tears came to my eyes.
"Sis," he said, leaning over. I leaned into him and he hugged me. "We'll get out of here. I promise."
