| Chapter One The rain streamed down my face as a shiver shuddered up my spine. I looked at him, the one I had loved for so long. For some inexplanable reason my mind was blank. It was like time had stopped for us. The streets were empty, no cars or people bothered us in our moment of private silence. I opened my mouth to say something. What, I don't know. "I didn't expect to run into you," Ritchie finally spoke. "Me either," I replied, talking over the rain. "It's been a while, hasn't it?" he tried to make polite conversation. I nodded in response. The shiver made its way through my spine again and I wrapped my arms around myself. "Do you want to go somewhere? You must be freezing." "Yeah," I quietly responded. "Um, I live closer than you do, why not stop by my place?" I offered. This is crazy, I thought to myself. Ritchie nodded and I led the way. When we reached the condo I lived in, I reached in my purse to grab my keys. They slipped as I pulled them out and fell on the steps between Ritchie and I. We both leaned down to grab it and banged our heads. I looked up and his blue eyes met mine. I swallowed and stood again. Ritchie grabbed my keys and handed them to me. "Thanks," I said as I stuck the key in my door knob, turned, and unlocked it. I pushed the door open to reveal my home. It opened into a rather spacious living room with a simple light brown leather couch facing my entertainment system. I took off my wet jacket and laid it on the chair next to the door. Ritchie stood there, looking out of place. "Take off your coat, stay a while," I joked, moving into the living room. I realized I was still clutching the newspaper and dropped it on the arm of the couch. I glanced behind me to see Ritchie remove his coat and place it next to mine. Just like old times, I thought to myself. I headed next into the kitchen, over looking the living room. I grabbed a towel from the hall closet as I left the kitchen. "Towel?" I called to Ritchie from the hall. A moment of silence passed then he replied. "No, thanks, I'm alright," he spoke, almost distantly. I started to rub my soaked hair with my towel as I headed toward the living room. I found Ritchie standing by the couch, reading the newspaper I had absently left. I stopped and my stomach did a nervous flip. "I, uhm," I stuttered. "Tabloids, eh?" Ritchie motioned toward the paper. "I thought you hated these." "I do," I replied, moving and sitting on the couch. He folded the paper and replaced it to its previous spot. "Well, you know as well as I do it's just a paper full of lies," he sighed, sitting on the couch as well. I nodded in agreement. What exactly did he mean by that? Chapter Two... |
