Life on the farm By Thea Van Doorn
I was five years when my dad bought a small
farm. We had lived for a long time in a city.
My mom knew only a little about farming and
I knew nothing. Mom studied on farming, she
learned a lot.
We wanted a lot of animals right away
but dad said it would be better to start
with some smaller creatures. Dad got us some
rabbits. They were nice and fluffy; some
were pure white, others gray and black. We
put them all in one giant cage and before
we knew we had over fifty rabbits. The cage
had gotten to small we had to sell some.
Dad bought us some chickens and also a rooster. The rooster was the boss in the chicken
coup and he came chasing after us when we
wanted to gather the eggs. Next dad got us
a some pink piglets, my mom was so proud
of them that she brought them into the kitchen
to show my aunt Sjaan she was visiting us.
My aunt did not like the piglet at all, she
screamed so loud that we could not even hear
the delightful squeal of the piglet. We put
the piglets in the pen and watched them play
hide and seek in the clean straw. We went
to eat our lunch, after the lunch my friends
came to play I wanted to show them our little
pigs, they where gone out of their pen and
the door was open.
I ran inside to tell my mom that the piglets
had disappeared. "We have to start looking
for them right away", mom said. All
of my friends helped to look for the pigs.
We soon found one of them and brought it
back to the pen. The second one was not that easy to find
it was real good at playing hide and seek.
We could hear him make his squeal and snorting
noise but each time we came close to him
he would keep real quit. We finally circled
the bushes and started jelling and screaming
that got the little piglet confused, he came
out of the bushes. He was so nosy he wanted
to know what we where doing. Now that we
had tricked him out of the hiding place we
still had to catch him. The pink piggy looked
so innocent just standing there as he stared
at us but as soon as we made a move towards
him, he hurried out of our way.
He was a very smart little pig he ran
between two hills and stayed there. He thought
he was hiding on us. We, also had a plan,
mom would go up one hill and I went up the
other, my friends where to go in-between
the hills.
Mr. piggy stood looking at my friends
as
they slowly moved towards him. He made
up
his mind and went up the hill where
I was,
he saw me and changed his mind and
ran back
in between the two hills. He was not
going
to let us catch him, then suddenly
he went
up the hill where my mom was.
He tried to run passed my mom, quick
as could be mom dropped down and grabbed
the pig by his hind leg. Mr. Piggy squealed
so loud that dad came to see what was going
on. Dad roared with laughter as he took the
pig from mom and brought it to the pen. Dad
double-checked the door so the pigs could
not come out again. My friends told me that
it had been the best afternoon and the best
game they had played for a long time. Dad
told us, " now I know that you are all
born farmers. Every farmer has to know how
to catch a Pig".
