Crisis Web
International Crisis Group is a private,
multinational organisation committed to strengthening the capacity of the
international community to anticipate, understand and act to prevent and
contain conflict.
ICG’s approach is grounded in field
research. Teams of political analysts, based on the ground in countries at
risk of conflict, gather information from a wide range of sources, assess
local conditions and produce regular analytical reports containing practical
recommendations targeted at key international decision-takers.
Crimes
of War
The Crimes of War Project is a
collaboration of journalists, lawyers, and scholars that seeks to raise
awareness of the laws of war and of the human consequences when armed conflict
becomes entrenched. The goal of the Project is to translate the often dry,
dense and arcane language of international humanitarian law so that it will
have meaning and immediacy for news editors, reporters, policy makers,
students and the general public. This knowledge, we believe, will help combat
a sense of impunity by those in power and eventually reduce the incidence of
war crimes.
The Crimes of War Project was
established in 1999 to educate the general public and concerned professionals
about international humanitarian law (IHL) with specific emphasis on the
Geneva Conventions.
The Crimes of War Web Magazine is
posted every two months. Each issue consists of several articles organized
around an overarching theme, such as a current or past conflict, or a
groundbreaking development in international humanitarian law. There is an
overview, or "case study," as well as legal analysis by journalists or
scholars on related subjects. Photography, video, art, and testimony provide yet
another layer of detail, texture, and nuance
The project's first and central
product was a 400-page book, The Crimes of War: What the Public Should
Know, published by W.W. Norton in the Spring of 1999. The book, w is literally
designed as an A to Z guide to war crimes, and formatted as both a reference
book for individuals in the field and as a visual and vivid source book for a
wide variety of audiences, including the general reader. Crimes of War contains
140 original articles by some 90 journalists, jurists and scholars, as well as
photographs which graphically underscore the authors' words.
