LEAD – IN ACTIVITIES 1 Telling Stories I am going to tell a story as a lead-in activity. My aim is to introduce the differences between Past Continuous and Simple Past Tenses to the students in intermediate level. I am going to have a start with the story of “ The Ant and the Grasshopper”. The Ant and the Grasshopper In a field one summer’s day, a Grasshopper was hopping about. He was chirping and singing happily. At the same time, an Ant was passing by. He was bearing along with great toil. He was taking to the nest an ear of corn. “Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?” “I am helping to lay up food for winter,” said the Ant, “and I recommend you to do the same.” “Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; “we have got plenty of food at present.” But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food, and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for the days of necessity. 2 Questionnaire I am going to give the questionnaire below to one of the students in pairs. The student will write his/her guesses in the “my guesses” column, and after s/he finishes, s/he will ask the same questions to his/her friend. For every right answer s/he will get 1 point. Lead-in Activities One of my favourite ways of entering the lesson is reading a poem..,before the lesson I prepare a poem which is interested in the subject.. like; thinking of you is nice thing.. imagining of you is a hopeful thing.. it's like listening to the best music from the best singer of the world.. but I don't want listening,I want signing it.. I ask the sts to read it to each other.. after that I begin to explain the subject.. I say that today's subject is 'gerunds' so I go on the activities that I've prepared.. ______________________________________________________ LEAD IN ACTIVITY2 For example; the subject is 'adjectives'. I prepare a joke for the students.I wear like an old man with a stick in my hand.. I walk slowly about to die.. I ask them 'what am I now' I wait for their answers..(old) and then behave like a crazy ,I dance and ask them 'what am I now'(young) I call two students one is very tall and the other is short..I ask them how those are..wait their answers again..tall, short. I act like a very nice teacher and then vert strict and I wait for their comments..nice,bad.. I prepare some more things like this and then go on the activities.. Submitted by Murat Unver 3-C/ELT |
