Stump grinding is a process in which the stump of a tree is removed. There is absolutely no size limitation to this process only different degrees of depth. Standard stump grinding removes approximately 8" of the stump below grade. This provides more than enough depth to place a layer of soil with sod over the stump area. This depth also kills the main portion of the tree to help prevent suckers (small off shoots) from returning. Full grinding is possible. However with the exception of excavation to lay pavement, pipes, etc it serves no practical purpose.
Pricing on stump removal is dependant, like all tree work, on many variables. Most importantly is the size of main trunk. A rule of thumb is $4 per inch in diameter to have a stump ground out and cleaned up. the following is a quick list of ball park pricing.
1-10 in $30 or $3.00 an in
15 in $45 or $3.00 an in
20 in $70 or $3.50 an in
30 in $105 or $3.50 an in
35 in $140 or $4.00 an in
40 in $160 or $4.00 an in
+50 in $250 or $5.00 an in
These prices are ball park. They often hold very steady for the mid to smaller sized stumps but often aren't very accurate for those over 35 inchs. Other factors to take into consideration are variety of the tree, partially rotten, how closely cut to the ground, distance from vehicle access and most importantly...number of surface roots. These factors can raise or lower the cost from the above said list. Please feel free to
