Jonathan Logan Carson and Mary Sturdivant Presnell

Mac's Great Great Grandparents

The following is from Historical Reseach Report: The Carson House of Marion, North Carolina by Michael R. Hill, 1982, Chapel Hill, NC.

Jonathan Logan Carson, the youngest child of John Carson and his second wife, Mary, assumed ownership of the house. He had been born in the house in 1807 and would die there in 1866. thus, he was the only person, John Carson included, who lived his whole life in the house

Logan Carson married Mary Presnell in 1840. By 1842, after his father's death, the house became the center of the community government. Court was held there, the attic was used for a jail and the basement for meetings. In 1843, Gabriel Presnell, Mary's brother, was licensed to sell liquor there.

The house was expanded in the 1840's and an el was added in 1856. This was probably due to the success of having boarders. The road going past the house was a well traveled and it was a stage coach stop and even a school at one time. It must have been a very lively place.
