THE EARLY HISTORY OF ALL THAT IS SPACECAMP:

12.14.02 - Grog & Tankard
Good Enough, Dream On, War is Over, WOWY, Alive, Illusion, WFTWE, Tied to Fate, Lost, Time, She'll Walk, Leavin', RVM, Baba.
According to G&T management, this was our best show yet. Though terribly untrue, it very well may be that the crowd was the best we've had. Wow. Matt debuts his tuxedo shirt. Rob breaks a string during Time (see 4.30.02 below for the irony.) Bobby B. wears festive green socks. George was not tattoed this time, and everyone was visibly upset. We had the honor of playing after Slick57, who hail from Texas. Don't mess with Texas.

11.23.02 - Lauinger Library 1st Floor
Another devastating threesome of recordings begins to take form in a larger and friendlier production studio. Thanks to our Australian fans for the support, and to New South cafeteria for the bagels. The 6-song Grog'd EP would later serve as a relic of this time period.

11.21.02 - Grog & Tankard
Illusion, Thank You, She'll Walk, Tied to Fate, WFTWE, Baba, WOWY, Lost, Good Enough, Dream On, Leavin', RVM.
First show in a while, longest set yet. We unveiled some new material. We joined forces with the fabulous Moo Shoo Porkestra to raise money for charity. George used his talkbox, Carl unleashed blood curdling screams, 80's jeans were debuted as well. 100 people there maybe. Bobby Bass' friends cheered for him, as he requested.

10.04.02 - Gaston Hall
Good Enough, Illusion, RVM, Thank You, Leavin, Baba.
Opened for Granian and The Chickenheads. We never had a dressing room or free food before. That was sweet. In addition, we had really nice equipment and terribly large speakers to play with, some groovy people showed up, and things were loud. Matt destroyed his cymbals at the end. Granian was condescending, Chickenheads (blues/funk/R&B) were ridiculously good. Good times were had by all backstage, especially when "Bigfootz" from the C-Heads chimed in with a well placed, "that's what she said." (VHS&CD)

9.27.02 - Lauinger Library 1st Floor
The Camp spends ten straight hours in "the dungeon", smuggling bagels from the cafeteria in and smuggling rock n' roll back into your living rooms. "You Don't Need Pants..." finally began to take shape during these top-secret recording sessions.

9.21.02 - Mr. Smith's
Simpleman, SIAS, RVM, Thank You, Good Enough, WoWY, Leavin', Baba, WFTWE.
The Camp opens for Boss Motel, it's the most fun the band has had yet. Chants of "one more song" and "Loverboy" forced the band to raise Workin for the Weekend from the grave as an encore. Only ten people realized that we were faking it, so we celebrated with French onion soup and champagne (courtesy of our #3 fan Josh Holt.)

9.20.02 - Hoyastock II
Good Enough, Illusion, Thank You, Leavin.
Our triumphant return. Good times were had by all. This was the fabulous debut of George and his mysterious body tattoos. There were maybe 250 people there. Congratulations to the Mason Terrorists on their stunning victory.

8.15.02 - Summer 2002
The bandmembers say their goodbyes and take a nearly five month long hiatus. Good Enough begins to take shape in the form of demo recordings and lyrics on napkins - Dubya drives down to Delaware to work on the song with Carl. (Alright, not too much progress was made.) Matt chills out and Bobby Bass becomes a door to door knife salesman. By the end of August, George Hwang of Interhall Talent Show fame is formally asked to join the band. Tears are shed.

4.30.02 - Healy Lawn/GU Day
Time, Halo, WFTWE, With or Without You, RVM.
Technical difficulties abound. Bobby's bass decides to not work. Dubya breaks a string, then decides to rip them all off and proceeds to bleed all over. Melodramatic? Yes... Jonathan solos in style as usual. This closes out the Spacecamp fiscal year of shows, hopefully we will get signed next year. Ha.

4.28.02 - Copley Formal Lounge
    Illusion, Eyesore
After a brief hiatus, Spacecamp is asked to perform at a talent show. That's right, a talent show. It was an intimate setting, an exciting night, nonetheless. The epic poem, "Talent Show" was debuted with accompaniment, you can read it here if you like. This was our first acoustic experience. It should also be mentioned that the Camp is witness to the then-solo artist George Hwang, who wows the band with his solo on Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing.

4.13.02 - Hoyastock
Say it ain't So, Halo, Illusion, Alive, Baba.
Back to the Freshman stomping grounds for more ridiculousness. Cool event, great bands. We get videotaped, and photographed, accosted, booed, complemented, attacked, and honored which is all quite surprising. Then we all go into the basement, stand around in a circle and mope. (VHS)

4.11.02 - Hoya's Bar/First Show
Say it ain't So, Long Way Down, Simpleman, Illusion, Alive, Baba, Confrontation Jam, Big Empty, My Friends, etc.
What a fucking disaster. The fine gentleman from Catch a Fire open up the show after demanding complementary dinner and alcohol, and proceeded to play the Counting Crows equivalent of Hot For Teacher. The Camp took the stage, played 4 songs, and was then informed that they had to surrender the drumset after 2 songs. This infuriates Jonathan who then leaves and argues with Catch a Fire & Catch a Fire's mom, while inside the bar the band improvises the new song, "Confrontation Jam," which was pure genius according to Gautham Srinivas. After playing Baba O' Riley, the drumset was dismantled and the band played without drums or rhythm or anything. Good thing we had a bottle of wine for after the show, compliments of our tour manager Jess Maley. (VHS)

3.18.02 - Founding
The official founding of Spacecamp took place this week. A momentous occassion; the rhythm section members all gave up drinking and got matching tattoos. The band began to take everything seriously and prepared a 24 song setlist for their upcoming show.

3.16.02 - The Basement/Reservoir Road
A St. Paddy's Day extravaganza. Brendan sings RVM, and joins in on Immortality. Some drunk chicks steal the mic and sing Say it aint So & Sweet Home Alabama. We beg them to leave. Rob sings Alive and then falls down. Green beer everywhere... we don't remember many of these events.

3.15.02 - Auditions
Rigorous auditions are held to find the right lead singer. Matt discovers a crumpled piece of paper in his pocket with Carl's number on it, and calls it. The audition is held - sans Jonathan - and it becomes clear to the band that the singer issue is resolved.

2.13.02 - Uncommon Grounds
    Immortality, Illusion.
The Dubya/MacLeod duo known as Girl Scout wows the crowd with a Camp staple and a faithful rendition of a plodding alt-rock dirge.

2.06.02 - Uncommon Grounds
    Patriot, Tangerine.
An open mic appearance. No one came out for this one, not even the band. Vote Garvey/Morrison for GUSA.

1.15.02
Late one night, after some intense partying, Bob Kriz is invited down to the basement to demonstrate his bass abilities. He is initially daunted by Jonathan's indomitable skills, but decides to heed the call of space destiny. Regular practices begin for this strange new quartet. Matt's roommates are kind enough to support us during these early sessions with supplies of Iron City beer and verbal encouragement.

1.05.02
Matt Niemi decides to bring his amazing electronic drumset with him after Christmas Break. Jonathan McLeod returns from India. Bob Wiecezak steals a corduroy jacket from his roommate JP. They realize that it is their destiny to form a rock band, headquarted in "the basement."
