 FINALLY ~ CHAPTER SIX
Amy Vining looked at
the clock. There was only fifteen minutes left on her shift and she couldnt have
been more relieved. It had been a hectic night at the hospital and one she was
glad it was ending. She looked up when the elevator opened and squinted her eyes
when Carly ran off of it. Her face was stained with tears and she was short of
breath like she had been running. She was very obviously upset.
"Amy!
Amy! Where's my mother?!"
Amy scowled. "This is a hospital, Carly.
Bobbie is a nurse. You might find this hard to believe but she has patients to
look after and no time to deal with your crisis of the hour."
If the man
she loved more than life itself was not lying bleeding on the ground, Carly
would have slapped her. But right now all she could think of was Jason. "I
need my mother, Amy." She said through gritted teeth. "And I don't
have time to deal with your issues. So could you please find her for me?"
Amy let out a disgruntled sigh and picked up the phone to page Bobbie
Spencer.
Just then Carly spotted her mother walk walk into the room.
Carly ran to her and grabbed her hand. "Bobbie. Oh God. I need your help!"
Carly's voice was strained and panicked.
"What is it? What's wrong?"
Bobbie's eyes widened with fear as she imagined a million different tragedies.
Carly had her wrist in a death grip.
Carly leaned into her mother and
whispered. "You need to bring a medical kit. Jason's been shot."
"Oh my
God! I'll be right there." Bobbie pulled free of Carly grip and ran down the
hall.
Carly paced the floor. She wouldnt allow herself to think that she
and Bobbie might not get there in time. It just wasnt possible in Carly's mind.
Jason was going to be fine. He was going to live. With every ounce of her
Spencer resolve she willed him to live.
Bobbie appeared wearing her coat
and carrying a medical bag. She went to the Nurse's Station. "Amy, there's been
a family emergency. It's Michael." The words came out of Bobbie's mouth before
she realized it and she caught herself wondering for an instant if Carly got her
propensity to lie from her.
Amy's eyes widened in horror. "Oh Bobbie,
I'm so sorry. I'll tell Alan as soon as I see him."
"NO!" Bobbie's voice
was forceful. Then she softened it when she saw Amy's reaction. "I don't want to
worry him it could just be Carly over reacting. But as a grandmother I need to
go check on him." Her eyes pleaded with Amy not to ask questions.
Amy
smiled. She despised Carly with a passion but she would never cross Bobbie. "I
saw nothing. You weren't feeling well and needed to go home early."
Bobbie reached across the desk and squeezed Amy's hand. "Thank you." She
said. She then grabbed Carly's arm and rushed onto the elevator.
Hannah had no idea how long she had been in the cabin. She
wondered if Larkin was looking for her. If he would discover that she was
missing. She then realized how sporatic her contact had been with him. How she
had blown off meetings and calls to spend time with Sonny. To stall the case
against him for as long as she could. Larking wouldn't be suspoicious for at
least days. And she knew that by the time he was, she would be dead and her body
long disposed of. It was a horrible feeling to know that the man you loved was
going to end your life and one Hannah didnt want to face. She wriggled her hands
some more. Hoping to loosen the ropes. But Johnny had tied too many people to do
it carelessly and and she knew her efforts were a waste of time. She had not
seen Johnny for at least an hour and assumed he was in one of the other
rooms....waiting to get the call. The call she knew would end her life.
"Johnny...? Johnny, are you there?" Hannah called out in a steady voice.
She was trying to stay as calm as possible.
Johnny walked into the room.
He stood by the door and just looked at her. Not speaking. Not moving. His face
a mask of no emotions.
"Is Sonny going to kill me himself? Or is he
going to make you do the dirty work?"
Johnny narrowed his eyes slightly.
"I do what I'm told."
"Oh. So that includes murdering someone that
yesterday you were smiling at and laughing with? Someone you helped move and
held doors open for?" She tried to sound as neutral as possible.
Johnny's face didnt change at all as she spoke. It was as if he had
never seen her before. As if she was a stranger to him. "That includes whatever
I'm told to do, Miss Scott."
Hannah tried to keep from smiling. His use
of her name was something. It was a good sign she thought. "Sounds like a bad
way to live your life."
Johnny shook his head. "Maybe. But I suppose you
have to do whatever those people at the FBI tell you, now don't ya?"
Hannah winced. Maybe not so good. "They never tell me to kidnap people
and kill them in cold blood."
Johnny didnt move a muscle but Hannah felt
as if he had shrugged. "I suppose they dont. But then again I've never been told
to lie to someone so that I could ruin them."
"And is not lying so much
better than not killing?"
"I don't know. I just do as I'm told."
"Look Johnny. Just let me talk to Sonny. I just need to explain to him.
I need to make him understand. Please...just for a minute?"
"I don't
think that's possible Miss Scott." And Johnny turned and left the room again.
But Hannah could almost swear she'd seen something in his eyes. Heard something
in his voice. Something when she had mentioned Sonny. Something that lead her to
believe that Sonny wasnt going to be the person making the call.
Jason was struggling to stay awake. He tried to focus on Carly's
face. He thought of her fiery brown eyes. Her generous smile. Her beautiful
body. He thought of every mole or freckle that marked her skin. Every tiny
detail he could trace in his mind kept him from slipping away if only for a few
more minutes. He thought of the way her eyes got watery when she was upset. Or
the way her nose flared when she was angry at him. He thought of how sweet she
tasted when he kissed her. How wonderful she felt in his arms. But mostly he
thought of the one thing he knew could keep him alive. The thought of seeing her
again.
Jason was drifting to unconciousness when Bobbie and Carly
arrived at the boxcar. He heard Bobbie saying his name as if she was a hundred
miles away not sitting right there in front of him. He felt her cool hands touch
first his cheeck then his forehead, checking for fever. But he just kept
drifting away...
"God damn it Jason Morgan...don't you dare leave us
again! Do you hear me?" Carly's voice was loud and forceful. "A bullet is no
excuse to leave the people you love. The people that love you...."
He
felt Bobbie move him forward and begin unbuttoning his shirt. He felt her He
felt her tending his wound and Carly holding him....Carly. He could feel her
touch. Smell her skin. Hear her voice begging him not to leave her. And he
started to drift back.
His voice was a whisper "Carly..."
And
then he drifted off again.
