Her real name, her origins, education, and education aspirations.Sultanita's real name is Maria. She was born in Texas, in 1981, but grew up in the lovely country of Mexico, in the wonderful city of Monterrey. She completed her K-12 education in Mexico (with very good grades, btw). She graduated from the Preparatoria #15 of the UANL (High School) in 1999. After spending her childhood and early teenage years thinking that she would spend the rest of her life as a medicine doctor, she suddenly changed her mind and decided she would major in Electronic Engineering/Computer Science. She started studying that at the Facultad de Ingenieria Mecanica y Electrica (FIME) of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL). But, after spending about 18 years of her life in Monterrey, Mexico, and in spite of having started her college education, she moved back to Texas (Spring 2000). For one short semester she was a student at FIME. And one full semester she slacked. When Fall 2000 came, she enrolled full-time at Laredo Community College, majoring in Computer Information Systems. She really had no choice due to BIG financial limitations although her dream was to attend MIT for engineering. Of course, MIT decided she was not good enough or something, so instead, she packed her things and moved to Southern California, hoping to one day be able to attend UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, where she planned to continue with some sort of engineering major, but life has its twists, and she now wants to attend Chapman University to major in Psychobiology to perhaps become a Psychiatrist... or a lawyer? She likes attending college in her native country, anyway, because she considers this to be a wonderful challenge and opportunity in her life, since God knows how expensive is life in California! She currently attends Cypress College for IGETC requirements. |
Likes, dislikes, hobbies, what she has heard others say about herMaria enjoys reading anything, as long as it is readable. She loves creating, and has a wonderful time generating creative ideas. A lot of this translates into beaded jewelry. She somehow manages to be a geek, even though as of lately she is not much of a geek. She is not a very good singer, but loves to sing; not a very good dancer, but loves to dance. Maria also loves to generate new ideas for anything, even though most of them are usually duds; she loves to "invent" new stuff and redesign the old stuff. |
WorkAs a part-time/freelance job, she translates English-Spanish and Spanish-English texts, and edits manuscripts in Spanish. (Some people say she is obsessed in having a perfect grammar and spelling... yeah, RIGHT!!)She was also an English tutor and a lab assistant (night shift) atschool. Then, she spent the summer of 2001 working at the Technical Center of the FAA in Atlantic City, NJ. Then she came back to school for one semester (to her old tutoring and lab jobs), and then went to work for the Caribbean Basin Agricultural Trade Office, part of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S.D.A., then moved to California where she has been a way underpaid Database Administrator for FlashEcom, a minimum-wage slave for SavOn Drugs, a driver, used car saleswoman, a Food and Beverage/Room Service Server-slave for the Anaheim Marriott Suites, and ultimately, a Help Desk Technician for Secured Funding Corporation. |
Extracurricular activitiesAt school, she was a member of the CIS club. She was a collaborator (as photographer and article writer) for the McIntosh Express, also known as the "school paper".Since she wanted to contribute to the Linux movement, on late February 2001, she started looking into the possibility of founding a Linux User Group, and it was a reality. (Thanks to everybody who was helping out; she could have never done it all by herself.) The project, unfortunately, died out as she moved away from Laredo. She currently tries to involve herself in altruistic projects and is part of the Honors Program at Cypress College. |
Contacting her.You can mail her for more questions... aaah and her picture should be somehwere around here. This one features her first "new look": shorter, curly hair, with remaining tones of burgundy from a temporary dye she tried in June 2001... the picture is from 2001.Of course, after this picture, she's had longer hair, gained a few pounds, boasted a shaved head, and now wears her hair short. [DISCLAIMER: The author never claimed any beauty, neither did she say that she liked to wear makeup or do her hair, therefore, the picture shows her pretty much in a terrible shape... It is taken at the office. :) [CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK.] |
