Wheelchair Tennis has been played by area athletes since 197 . The only variation in this adaptive sport is the use of a second bounce, if needed, in regulation play. All other rules & regulations are identical to traditional tennis and are governed by the ITF's and USTA's wheelchair divisions. Competition is held throughout the world, with the majority of Sun Wheeler athletes competing in sanctioned matches between Boca Raton, FL to Flushing, NY. Players are divided into Mens, Womens, Youth, and Masters levels. Athletes are catagorized by skill level into Divisions within these levels. Open-Elite athletes, professionals within the sports. A Div-Elite athletes unable to meet the expenses and rigors of travel necessary for Open competition. B Div-Advance Intermediate athletes. C Div-Intermediate athletes. D Div-Beginner/novice athletes. Open, A & B Divisions also accomidate the competitive needs of those athletes with hand/arm impairments by providing a Quad Division. Practices are held throughout the year, usually dependent on the weather. Annually, the area host the Virginia Beach Wheelchair Tennis Classic in May. This a great opportunity to compete, spectate, or volunteer your time in this local tournament.
