Sunday After is a new rock-influenced band out of Norman, Oklahoma, whose versatile repertoire takes the listener through a journey spanning heavy single-riff led rock songs such as “Fat” to slower, lyric driven acoustic melodies like “Hollowed for Nothing” and everything in between. While the main focus of their songs are the lyrics, each score offers a catchy melody at the heart, leaving every person with a rock based tune to look forward to. The band lists influences from Fuel, Three Doors Down, Seven Channels, The Nixons, and Metallica, but when asked to describe their sound, they describe it as a cross between Creed and Seven Mary Three.
The core of the group’s roots began in the room fondly known as "the Sauna", which was in the attic of Kevin’s parents’ house. The nickname "The Sauna" came about due to the lack of air circulation during Oklahoma summers, which has sweltering temperatures often reaching 90 degrees and above. During this time Eric and Kevin would often play from mid afternoon to late evening and many times on through out the night. Eric, who has been playing for roughly 4 years, had always had an affinity towards the guitar, but never got the chance due to a rigorous school schedule and extracurricular activities. It wasn’t until a tragic accident in Eric’s life that caused him to seriously begin learning how to play guitar. To him, the guitar served as an emotional outlet for the confusion surrounding this incident. Kevin’s start, however, came about in a much different way. While on a skiing trip, he broke his ankle while snowboarding, and since he had nothing much to do while his leg was mending, he borrowed a friend’s guitar and amp and started teaching himself. Eric and Kevin had met through mutual friends in high school, but it wasn’t until Eric visited a broken Kevin that they discovered each other’s passion for guitars. After a few months of playing together they decided to venture out to seek a singer. They first performed with a friend of theirs, but ultimately, the sound wasn’t exactly what they were looking for, so they went in search for another singer. On their new quest for vocal talent, Eric thought of Charles Baker, who sung at his church every Sunday. When asked to join, Charles jumped at the chance to try something new. Charles had begun singing as a little boy at his father’s church, and later on in life, had a year of formal opera and classical voice training with Catherine McDaniel at Oklahoma Christian University, but had never sung in a band before. He had showcased his talents up until then by participating in high school musicals playing versatile roles such as Danny Zuko in “Grease” and Frank Butler in “Annie Get Your Gun”. The trio started out playing Fuel and Three Doors Down songs and progressed from there, but it wasn’t until Kevin met David Garrett in a class at the University of Oklahoma and Bryce Martens in his fraternity that the band’s final line up was complete. David started playing drums in high school and continues to play in the drumline at the University of Oklahoma. Bryce, who has played guitar for 6 years, switched to primary bass to fill the last remaining slot in the band. Though he has been in many bands before this, he is certain that he has finally found his place with Sunday After. (Bryce lists his personal influences from Neil Young and Classic Rock.)
Eric, Kevin, Charles and David have been playing together for over a year first under the name Centered, but after discovering another band that shared the same name, changed it to Sunday After. (The name came about because the band used to rehearse every Sunday Afternoon, thus yielding the name Sunday After.) A few months ago they added Bryce to the mix to complete their sound. They have only recently begun making their sound heard throughout the Norman/ Oklahoma City area. Sunday After has been frequently playing a local club called The Firehouse in Norman. They have also performed at many other venues in and around Oklahoma City, including Stillwater and the University of Oklahoma. They recently participated in The Battle of the Bands in Yukon, OK where they took home first place. In January of this year, Sunday After entered a recording studio where they compiled a six-song demo consisting of their first songs, “Dive”, “Fallen Angel”, “Interlude”, “Hallowed for Nothing”, “Day 121”, and “Contradiction”. Lead singer Charles Baker reflects upon the experience as “A learning experience, definitely a learning experience. We went into the studio raw, and never having heard ourselves before, and ended up having to learn some of the songs over again. It really helped us to see where we were as a band.” They band is always seeking to expand and improve upon their music, wanting to ensure that their music speaks to their fans. Currently the band has been writing masses of new material and is gearing up to return to the studio to record a full-length independent album.
