One should note that each clubs procedures and responsibilities for each role may vary slightly. The Table topics evaluator (TTE) role is similar to the General Evaluator except that only the Table topics session is evaluated at this time. This is a great role to truly work on ones listening skills. You will have a lot of speakers in a very short order to evaluate both positively and constructively. This role is a fundamental role in why we all joined toastmasters. We all like to hear what areas we are doing well in and which areas we need to improve. The Table Topics Evaluator: Prior to the Meeting: Establish what you want to focus on during this session of table topics. It may help to contact the Table Topics master to discuss what and how he/she will be conducting them. Always try to vary the focus item from meeting to meeting. This is recommended because due to the many speakers and the short period it is impossible and one should not strive to conduct a full evaluation on each speaker during this session. However you should provide sufficient feedback on the session of the day. During the Meeting: Evaluate the Table Topic Master - on preparation, explanation, and presentation. Decide on whether you are going to do a group evaluation with general comments or an individual evaluation. When doing this one has to consider the time available and the number of speakers you have to evaluate. Ideally as a minimum one should strive to provide both positive and constructive feedback. A suggested approach is the sandwich approach to evaluations for table topics. The sandwich approach is best described as "thin slices of meat (areas of improvement) sandwiched between thick slices of bread (what the person is doing well). A suggested format to your evaluation should include an explanation for the guests the role you are filling and why we all feel it is important and a requirement of all toastmaster clubs. Also the reiteration that this is one persons perceptions and opinions. Each of us all have different speaking styles and that toastmasters is a venue to try new things and to experience other members styles and experiment with your own in a safe environment. Then go into the body of your evaluation and concluding comments. |
