Aftermath
Yep, after the wedding and the trial. I have to speed things up and you'll have to pretend Annie and Jude's making love in the office happened in September, not November.
Vanessa is sitting at her computer at work, but stops typing to think as one of the food critics walks by.
VANESSA: Morning, Gertrude.
GERTRUDE: Good morning, Vanessa. How was the honeymoon?
VANESSA: Fabulous. I didn't want it to end.
GERTRUDE: That's wonderful.
VANESSA: How are things with you?
GERTRUDE: Good, good. I'm a little worried about the new management.
VANESSA: What new management?
GERTRUDE: You didn't hear? The paper is under new ownership. Apparently the new owner is going to be very hands on.
VANESSA: I wonder who it is.
GERTRUDE: I have no idea. But I think Bette Katzenkazarahi knows.
VANESSA: I'm just going to have to have a talk with Bette.
Vanessa looks off into space thinking.
Meg is standing at the register of the shop. Emily walks in from the back.
MEG: Did you do inventory, Emily?
EMILY: Yeah, I did it early this morning.
MEG: Really? Great. The best thing we ever did was hire you.
EMILY: Thanks, Meg.
Eddie walks in.
EMILY: Morning, Eddie. Did my Mom make you one of her infamous bowls of cereal again?
EDDIE: Yeah, and to repay her I thought I would get her a present. You work here?
EMILY: Yeah. I'm a lifeguard too.
EDDIE: Great. Can you think of anything I might get your Mom? I have to hurry too, before I'm late for work.
All the while Meg has been staring in shock.
MEG: Eddie?
EDDIE: Hi, Meg. I didn't see you there.
MEG: You're dead.
EDDIE: No. Derek had me held captive. I'm not sure why yet.
MEG: Who else knows?
EDDIE: Bette, AJ, Annie, Jude, Emily, Evelyn, David, Sean, Leo, Ricardo, DA Steele, Ruiz, Spence. Ricardo and I are partners.
MEG: In what?
EDDIE: I'm a PI now.
MEG: Wow.
EDDIE: Hard to believe?
MEG: Yeah. You know Derek is dead, right?
EDDIE: And that Ben shot him and his girlfriend is in jail and his kids being raised by Ben and Maria.
MEG: I can't believe you're alive.
EDDIE: Bette told me that I should let you and Ben stay in your honeymoon period for a while until I revealed myself. I didn't know you work here, or I would have gone somewhere else.
EMILY: Meg owns it. She's one of the Sunset Sisters.
MEG: My sister, Sara, is the other.
EDDIE: I see.
MEG: Well, look around at whatever, Eddie.
EDDIE: Thanks, Meg.
Next scene, Jude and Annie are in bed together the morning after their wedding.
ANNIE: You know, I was supposed to rest when we got home.
JUDE: And?
ANNIE: I had a much better time staying awake.
JUDE: So did I. But you should start taking it easy.
ANNIE: Okay, okay. But I have to go to the media center today.
JUDE: Why?
ANNIE: Because I am now the majority stock holder of the Liberty Corporation and I own the Sentinel. I want an active role in the companies I run.
JUDE: Okay. But only because I have to go to work today too.
ANNIE: The day after we get married and we both have to work. Okay, a few months after the babies are born we're going on a honeymoon.
JUDE: It's a deal.
ANNIE: We have to go see Tyus tomorrow.
JUDE: Okay. I'd better get ready to go.
ANNIE: Yeah.
JUDE: I love you, Mrs. Cavanaugh.
ANNIE: Mr. Cavanaugh, I love you very much.
She watches him head to the bathroom.
Casey walks down the stairs from Surf Central and sees him Mom reading on the sofa.
CASEY: Morning, Mom.
ALEX: Hi, Sweetie.
CASEY: We set a date.
ALEX: Oh, that's wonderful news.
CASEY: May 11th.
ALEX: I'll be there.
CASEY: I had a weird dream last night.
ALEX: What about?
CASEY: I dreamed dad came back and stopped my wedding.
ALEX: That'll never happen.
CASEY: He doesn't care enough to stop it.
ALEX: Now, Casey, your father --
CASEY: Don't, Mom. You don't have to make excuses for the man. He chose to leave us.
ALEX: Okay.
CASEY: I have to go to work. When Sara comes down can you tell her I love her and I'll be back later?
ALEX: Consider it done.
CASEY: Thanks.
He hugs her before he leaves.
David rings the door at Evelyn's house. Bette answers.
BETTE: David, what are you doing here?
DAVID: I'm taking Evelyn to the doctors.
BETTE: Oh, okay then. I think she'll be down in a second.
Again, the door bell rings. Bette answers it and a delivery man is standing there.
DELIVERY MAN: Delivery for Evelyn Deschanel.
BETTE: I'm her mother, I'll take it.
DELIVERY MAN: Just sign here.
She does, the man gives her the envelope and he leaves.
BETTE: So, you and Evelyn went out last night.
DAVID: Yes.
BETTE: Must have been some date, she came home dripping wet.
DAVID: We jumped off the pier.
BETTE: You know your father...
DAVID: I know. But my father is a murderous fiend who needed something that could give him an excuse to pretend to be dead.
BETTE: You're right.
Evelyn comes downstairs.
EVELYN: Ready to go?
DAVID: Yes.
BETTE: This letter came for you.
EVELYN: What is it?
BETTE: I don't know.
She opens it and a look of pure joy comes across her face and she shrieks in delight before she kisses David.
BETTE: Good news?
EVELYN: Very, but we're running late.
Evelyn and David walk out and close the door behind them.
DAVID: What was it?
EVELYN: They bought my book and want twenty-nine more over the next five years.
DAVID: That's great. I'm so proud of you.
He kisses her on the cheek and they walk off hand in hand.
Ben is talking to Alex at the Liberty Corporation.
ALEX: So, Gregory is no longer majority stock holder.
BEN: No, no. I have no idea who is. AJ should know, but he isn't around to tell me anything.
ALEX: I guess we'll find out at today's meeting.
BEN: Yes, we're just waiting on AJ, Olivia, and that new stock holder.
ALEX: They should be here soon.
Next scene, Jude walks into FBI headquarters. It's his first day back since busting Gregory. An agent approaches him.
AGENT: Jude, Milton wants to see you.
JUDE: Okay.
He knocks on the door of his boss' office. He's told to come in.
MILTON: Cavanaugh, bad news.
JUDE: What is it?
MILTON: Your first day here and all I hate to break this to you.
JUDE: What is it?
MILTON: They're releasing Gregory Richards.
JUDE: What?
MILTON: The woman he killed is not really dead.
JUDE: I know that.
MILTON: So, now we're being told there isn't enough to hold him on.
JUDE: This is not good. We let him loose he will do something equally as bad again.
MILTON: We'll just have to catch him in it.
JUDE: What about appealing to the court. He stole billions of dollars.
MILTON: It's in the process. We might want to let his family know.
JUDE: And Annie.
MILTON: The ex-wife?
JUDE: Yes, he's tried to kill her before. She has everything that was once his. He'll be after her...And the babies. My God, he can't get out!
MILTON: Calm down, Cavanaugh. What babies?
JUDE: Mine, mine, Annie's pregnant. I want men following her after he's released. I can't always be around her and someone has to be. He will try and kill her.
MILTON: Why do you have such an interest in this?
JUDE: She's my wife, Sir.
MILTON: Since when?
JUDE: Yesterday.
MILTON: He's begin released in two weeks if we can't stop it. If he is, the moment they let him someone will be tailing her until we can stop him.
JUDE: Thank you.
MILTON: You'd better go tell your wife and Richards' family.
JUDE: Okay.
Jude walks out of the office.
Olivia and Caitlin are having coffee in the living room.
OLIVIA: You know, I always thought that Annie could never become a good person.
CAITLIN: I just can't believe that Cole would do that.
OLIVIA: You did say some harsh things to Cole. And I do know that he loves you.
CAITLIN: I know. And I made a mistake with Jude. But after what Cole almost did with Annie. I just don't think I could forgive him.
OLIVIA: I understand. But you will forgive him and you will always love him. I love your father and I have forgiven him for sleeping with Annie.
CAITLIN: Annie is the thorn in the side of this family.
OLIVIA: She's a whore. And I'm sure the only reason she gave the house to us was so she could get something in return.
CAITLIN: I can't believe David is becoming friends with her. He told me last night that she and Jude got married and are going to have twins.
OLIVIA: My God, you cannot be serious.
CAITLIN: David wouldn't lie about it.
OLIVIA: He came home sopping wet last night.
CAITLIN: He jumped off of the pier with Evelyn Deschanel. She seems to be doing better.
OLIVIA: She's an alcoholic, it's not over and it will always be a struggle.
CAITLIN: I thin David has real feelings for her. He says she's his best friend and last night they had their first date.
OLIVIA: Where is he anyway?
CAITLIN: Evelyn has a doctors appointment this morning and he's taking her.
Sean comes down.
SEAN: Good morning.
OLIVIA: What do you know about your brother and Evelyn?
SEAN: He likes her. A lot. They're dating, I think.
CAITLIN: That's as far as we've gotten too.
SEAN: I'm going to head out. I have classes.
CAITLIN: It seems like you haven't been to school in ages.
OLIVIA: You can say that again.
They smile at one another and Sean leaves.
OLIVIA: That reminds me, Darling, I have to be at the Liberty Corporation. I'll see you later.
Jude walks in.
JUDE: Rose let me in. I have some news.
OLIVIA: What about?
JUDE: Gregory, they're letting him out in two weeks if I can't stop it.
CAITLIN: You think he should stay in jail.
JUDE: He tried to kill Francesca Vargas, stole a whole lot of money, faked his own death and impersonated a missing family member, and tried to kill Annie. Yeah, I want him in jail.
OLIVIA: You don't want to hear my thoughts on that last so-called-crime of his.
JUDE: If you have any respect for me you won't say anything derogatory about my wife in my presence. As hard as it is for you both to believe, I do love her and would not want to be with anyone else.
CAITLIN: All right.
JUDE: I just came over to tell you that. I have to go.
OLIVIA: So do I. And I have a stop to make beforehand.
Next scene, Annie is reading over what is to be in tomorrow's paper. She reaches for the button on the intercom.
ANNIE: Yvette? Could you call Vanessa Bourne in, please?
YVETTE: Sure.
Vanessa and Gertrude are again talking.
GERTRUDE: I'm still worried about it though. I don't like change.
VANESSA: I just wish we knew who he is.
Vanessa's phone rings and she picks it up.
VANESSA: Apparently our new boss wants to see me.
GERTRUDE: Good luck and let me know how it goes.
VANESSA: I will.
A moment or so later, Vanessa is knocking and Annie's door and coming in.
VANESSA: Annie! You're the new owner and editor?
ANNIE: Yes, I am.
VANESSA: What did you want to see me about?
ANNIE: You're article about my divorce.
VANESSA: What about it?
ANNIE: It won't be printed. Don't get me wrong, it is well written, every fact in it is true. But it is my life and I don't want it on the front page of the Sunset Sentinel. You have to understand.
VANESSA: I do. No more stories about our editor.
ANNIE: Thank you. What's this about the Mark Wolper Foundation? I saw the ad in this morning's paper?
VANESSA: Well, since Mark had a lot of dremas and didn't get to live them out and realize them we decided that there should be a way others could in his memory. So, it's essentially a scholarship fund. You come to the banquet for it, you pay and a kid goes to college to study what he likes.
ANNIE: Count us in. I'll get you a check and I'll throw in a little extra.
VANESSA: Seriously?
ANNIE: Yes. I know it's surprising, but I have changed.
VANESSA: I'm starting to see that.
The intercom beeps.
ANNIE: Yes, Yvette?
YVETTE: Mrs. Cavanaugh, what did you want me to do with those speradsheets?
ANNIE: Let me get back to you on that.
VANESSA: Mrs. Cavanaugh?
Jude walks in.
VANESSA: You two got married didn't you?
ANNIE: Yes.
VANESSA: Oh, this is wonderful.
JUDE: Um, Vanessa, could you give us a minute?
VANESSA: Oh, no problem. I have a story to write anyway.
Vanessa leaves.
ANNIE: What's wrong, Jude?
JUDE: Gregory is going to be released in two weeks.
Annie, who was standing when he came in, sinks into her chair.
JUDE: If I can't do anything to stop it.
ANNIE: He'll come after me. And when he finds out about our children he's going to target them too.
JUDE: I'll protect you.
He hugs her and kisses her.
