WARNING! This page not only takes just about forever to load, it's also pretty much under construction (like the rest of this site). And the collection introduced here is by no means complete. It's just my personal collection.
1978 Tubeway Army - The Plan **** this is not the first numan album and it did not appear in 1978. It's a collection of songs, that were recorded in 1978 as part of a session for the first actual album "tubeway army". Post-punk, pre-moog numan. Very interesting.
1979 Tubeway Army ***** Now this is the first Numan album. Heavy on guitars, not much electronics yet. Very different from 'cars' or 'are "friends" electric', but still essential numan. I played that one to death in the early eighties and I still can't seem to get enough of it. Highly recommended.
1979 Replicas ***** With 'the Pleasure Principle' perhaps the most numan of all Numan albums. "Down in the Park", "Are 'friends' electric?" ... Words fail me.
1979 The Pleasure Principle ***** With 'Replicas' perhaps the most numan of all Numan albums. And the one with "Cars" on it. Excellent.
1980 Telekon ***** Many fans consider this to be the best numan album. It is certainly an important one. So give it a listen!
1981 Dance ***** No, no dance music at all. New elements such as saxophone and fretless bass (played by Mick Karn). Definitely one of the strongest numan albums. More on the contemplating side of things, but still highly recommended.
1982 I, Assassin ***** This is one of my favourites. Powerful beats and lyrics. I love it.
1983 Warriors *** I have to admit that I was not altogether too happy when I first heard this album. Once more it marked a change. Although not necessarily to the better. Still there are some excellent songs on this one.
1984 Berserker **** New image, new sound. I like it.
1985 The Fury **** Inspired by the moview 'Blade Runner' numan started to experiment with haunting samples. "Call out the dogs" is a good example and an excellent song. |
Asylum 1 this japanese Beggars Banquet Release contains the albums the plan, tubeway army, replicas and the pleasure principle plus bonus tracks (see above)
Tubeway Army + Dance + bonus tracks (see above)
Replicas + The Plan + bonus tracks (see above)
The Pleasure Principle + Warriors + bonus tracks (see above)
1981 Telekon + I, Assassin + bonus tracks (see above)
1984 Berserker (extended) **** Well, I prefer the regular album to the extended extended versions (see above)
1985 The Fury (extended) **** (see above)
1986 Strange Charm ** The first song "My breething" ranks among the best numan tracks ever. Still this album is not among my favourites.
1988 Metal Rythm/New Anger ** This album appeared either under the title "Metal Rhythm" or "New Anger" depending on which part of this globe you purchased it. The track list was also slightly different. I do not really like it very much. The song "Voix" is nice 'though.
1991 Outland ** Things didn't really get much better three years after the release of Metal Rhythm. At least in my opinion. On the other hand there are a lot of fans out there who like this album.
1985 Machine & Soul (extended) *** This is a controversial album. Not one of numans best. Some people hate it and some claim that it's not so bad after all. I would subscribe to the latter point of view. It contains some songs I'm actually quite fond of.
1986 Sacrifice ***** Whoa, awsome. Perhaps the best numan album since "I, Assassin". Dark and brooding. Hypnotic rhythm loops and intense lyrics. Sparse instrumantation including heavily distorted guitars. You gotta buy this one!
1986 Sacrifice (extended) ***** see above!
1986 Exile ***** THIS IS IT, Ladies and Gentlemen. "Sacrifice" was damn excellent and this one may even be better. Excellent! |
