"If you're not impressing anybody in the mainstream, then you must be doing something right!" -Kristin Hersh, 1989.

MUSIQUE J'ADORE

music i love, i love music.
good golly, miss molly, you'd better believe it.
this page is gonna have lists of bands i like, including any good links i find. so - do you like what i like? have you even heard of some of these bands?

one of my favourite bands is PAVEMENT - the laundromat is my pavement page. it features some photos you may not have seen before. pavement have split now, and former member STEPHEN MALKMUS has just released his second album with the jicks. go check it, and his site out. other favourites:

ELLIOTT SMITH kicks arse.
SILVER JEWS - the joos are david berman's band. pavement members steve malkmus, steve west & bob nastanovich are sometimes members.
STEREOLAB - the excellent french/english band. their sound has been described in a boston paper as "leftist, minimalist, synth-pop, drone-buzz" - yeah, whatever. CHECK OUT MY STEREOLAB PHOTOS FROM 1998. RIP Mary, you'll be sorely missed. another site is here
TORTOISE - oh my god. i love you, john mcentire
PALACE - the oldham brothers are simply amazing. check out Will's solo stuff, too... the BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY disc "i see a darkness" is beyond words.
LAMBCHOP - beautiful music; bizarre lyrics.
VINCE JONES - australia's premier jazz singer and trumpeter. so coooooool.
THE CLASH - what can i say? thank the possibly existent deity for the clash. where would we be today without them? RIP Joe.
TOM WAITS - the more i hear, the more i love. he is the man.
GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR - indescribably good. (formerly known as GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR! - note the change in position of the exclamation mark!!!
SONIC YOUTH - especially since they've joined forces with the amazing JIM O'ROURKE!!!!
VELVET UNDERGROUND - similar sentiments to the clash.
R.E.M. - okay, 'wakeup bomb' sucked, but that doesn't mean they aren't one of the greatest bands of all time.
GUIDED BY VOICES - always crush me!
BUILT TO SPILL - how could you not like these guys???
STAN RIDGWAY - how could you not like this guy????
YO LA TENGO - hell, hal hartley directed a video for them! enough said!
GALAXIE 500 - 'decomposing trees' is one of the most beautiful tracks ever. dean wareham now fronts luna, and does it well.
THE BREEDERS - so cool to see them on buffy!!!
THE PIXIES - and frank black.
THROWING MUSES & KRISTIN HERSH - i also like kristin's quote, which is why it's at the top of the page.
SKELETON KEY - THANKS, MARTINI-BOY!
THE DIRTY THREE - surely too gorgeous to be Australian????
EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN - halber mensch!!! woo hoo! dig that blixa! (<- the excitement of an idiot is amusing to see, non?)
LONG FIN KILLIE - aha, stirs the blood.
SMOG - brilliant. saw him play at Cinema After Dark in Hobart, Nov 97. supported by the film The Quatermass Experiment. the coolest night of my life, perhaps.
SPARKLEHORSE - simply excellent.

assorted others, of varying levels of importance and in no order:
VIC CHESNUTT, NICK DRAKE, JSBX, BUTTER O8, MOGWAI, MOUSE ON MARS, BLACK HEART PROCESSION, BADLY DRAWN BOY, PARIS COMBO, MORPHINE (RIP Mark Sandman), SEA & CAKE, MONEY MARK (also see here), TMBG, BUTTERGLORY, PIZZICATO 5, BARBARA MANNING, ROYAL TRUX, KRAFTWERK, BIS, THE FALL, SUN RA, JIMMY SCOTT, CAT POWER, HAPPY MONDAYS, AND OTHERS I'VE SURELY FORGOTTEN FOR THE MOMENT.
