WASHINGTON, D.C. (Scooters) - President Clinton today announced his backing of a new federally-funded program aimed at renewing schoolchildren's interest in reading.
"A lot of what you are reading in school is boring, uninteresting, and has little to do with your lives," Mr. Clinton told a group of school-aged children who had gathered in the East Room of the White House for a traditional Christmas story. Instead, Mr. Clinton surprised the gathered children by asking them if they would like him to read something else.
Several children raised their hands, and one boy, Duane Suggins of Bellbrooke OH, asked the president if he had any "pictures of naked ladies."
The president asked his wife Hillary, to retrieve the copy of the periodical Spread Open, that he said he keeps "on my nightstand."
The delighted children, amid giggles and whispers, were treated to a special story.
