pure soul in DOME
-It was a pretty good (stage) set. I mean, JIRO's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
JIRO: I wanted the fans to feel like it was outer space. And then we used the color white. I tried to make a spaceship. So it was like, welcome to Glay's ship. Then we had BGM (background music)-it was like electronic sounds.
HISASHI: I made the SE (sound effects) and produced sounds. I also made the ending theme song. I was very interested in making such music. It's like BLADERUNNER and A Clockwork Orange. I enjoyed making the songs.
(aciel's note: 2001: A Space Odyssey, BLADERUNNER, and a Clockwork Orange are all movies about the future. But these movie titles are unsure.)
JI: The Dome Tour was a great tour but it gave us a vague impression because it was held in early '99 and after that, we had another big (event), such as the GLAY Jumbo and a concert in Makuhari.
(aciel's note: The GLAY Jumbo was when GLAY's name and the members' pictures were put on the boeing 747s which travelled between Hakodate and Tokyo. It was to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of JAL's Hakodate-Tokyo [flights]. It lasted from 6/25 until 9/15.)
TAKURO: It was our first time to use big and clear vision (maybe he means a television screen). CG Kei and TERU did an MC together.
(aciel's note: Kei was a computer graphics character. You can see her in the [LIVE in BIG EGG] video.)
JI: We tried mnay new things. How disappointing.
(aciel's note: JIRO is disappointed that the Dome Tour occurred in such bad timing-there was no time to make an impression because so many events occurred soon after that tour.)
HI: I liked the opening scene. It was very cool. I was very thrilled.
TERU: It was like the ultimate concert.
JI: I want to show the Dome Tour to the whole world.
TA: JIRO's Caramel Books was (also) released.
JI: (Laughs) Many people said to me, "JIRO has an idea." I thought I had a possibility which people didn't know. I was positive but I lacked vitality. At the time, the other members helped me a lot.
TA: Then we had an Okinawa and Hokkaido Tour.
HI: We felt free. I had a good feeling about (those tours) because it was right after the Dome Tour, where we tried to do our best.
TA: We could say a joke during the tour. (Laughs)
TE: They were very simple lives. There wasn't any plan.
TA: We appeared on NHK TV programs. We had a good reputation. But in Hokkaido, we had sashimi and crab...it was almost bigger than a baguette. I couldn't stand it anymore!
HI: Only Cup Noodles saved our lives. (Laughs)
JI: It was Cup Ramen. Why are you so delicious? (Laughs)
TA: I wanted to eat something (that was) cooked! (Not something raw, like sushi.)
JI: I remember TERU said, "We're done! ..." after finishing our long hall, stadium, and dome "pure soul" Tours.
TE: Yes, I remember that. My honest feelings. (Laughs)

GLAY EXPO'99
-The video single marked an epoch.
TE: I think, unlike a CD, a video needs more time to see it. It's not easy to listen. We have to think about it.
TA: I want to continue doing that but it's enough to release one in 2 years. If we made a good video, like a movie, the fans would watch it constantly. It's better than only sound. However, thinking about the core of the message in [Survival], "It was made in '99", I guess.
(aciel's note: TAKURO's last sentence implies that [Survival] was typical of GLAY in 1999. They tried many new things in that year, including the release of this video single.)
HI: I'm old. Morimo-chan.
TA: Who is Morimo-chan?
HI: Koji Morimoto, the director. I'm familiar with his movie, that's why in my mind, he is Morimo-chan.
JI: Is he your friend? (Laughs)
HI: I felt his manipulative directing abilities in [Survival] because he really didn't do survival.

-You prefer downloading to video if you think about spreading music?
HI: Let me see. I don't know. The period when we enjoy visual on the Net instead of CDs. Or we will release a DVD when it's more popular. Visual with the music is quite compatible. I think it's quite possible to release songs like [Survival] in the future.
(aciel's note: Hisashi is talking about a type of CD where you can hear the music as well as watch the video, like a DVD. Currently, most music CD formats are only audio, but he believes that releasing a video along with the song in the future is a very good idea.)
JI: This was in May. After that, we had the EXPO'99.
TE: I flew on the GLAY Jumbo. I was really nervous.

-You don't like to fly?
No, no. I sat in the first class. The person sitting next to me was a very big guy. He asked the stewardess, "Could you give me one more GLAY cup?" I was happy to hear that.
HI: At that time, if he had realized that the person sitting next to him was TERU...
TA: That guy would have kissed him.
TE: Why? (Laughs) That's impossible.
JI: I might. You were uncomfortable on the plane until it landed. Your body might be hard.
TE: I wore a cap on the plane.
TA: On that day, HISASHI and I went to see a B'z live at Yokohama. When we saw (Kohshi) Inaba's performance, we were determined to go to the gym. And then we went to Yakinikuya (a very famous barbecue house).
HI: Ah, let me see...
TE: After my flight, I joined them at Yakinikuya.

-You had a secret live right before the EXPO, didn't you?
TA: It was on the 26th, at Zepp Tokyo.
JI: Yeah. That terrible live?
HI: We played only the first (few) phrases of (all) the HEAVY GAUGE songs.
TE: Yes, we did.
JI: We did only riffs.
TE: That's right. Gangangangangann~.
TA: And then after playing, the song changed. It was stylish.
HI: It was stylish?
TA: That's enough talk about the EXPO because we talked a lot about it somewhere else.

-You're kidding...

aciel's note: I think that TAKURO is talking about the interview in Création magazine (Vol. 5), which featured GLAY's MAKUHARI MESSE EXPO '99 Survival. What I remember most about this period was how expensive GLAY got-they released a new live video, a box set, and a CD-ROM almost simultaneously.
