Ben Gunn @ The Cellar Bar, Cambridge
Probably not the best gig they'll ever play, this one. With no drummer
(she's ill), Simon and Sarah were reduced to acoustic guitar and bass
only, and with a bunch of people chatting at the bar there was no
real atmosphere. An almost apologetic introduction and a false start
to first song "Pavlov's dogs", a left-over from the days of Stripey,
didn't do a great deal to help either. 4 or 5 pleasant enough indie
songs (boy/girl vocals, jangle etc.) passed straight over most of the
audience's head before the night's saving grace arrived: "Gingham
dress". A frantic opening riff, simple structure, plenty of repetition
and all over in two minutes. Worthy of the door money itself and it
can only sound better when played by the full band.
