The Cuban Boys, Agitators of the music industry CD
Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher? I think not...Pop provocateurs the
Cuban Boys have caused a bit of a storm by keeping their identity
secret, and hence the subject of much speculation, whilst dishing out
only a few tapes of their sample-heavy brash tunes to those in the
know. Peel's played them to death, the NME playlisted them and Planet
Sound have given them an 8-page spread. That's the hype but what of
the music? Well, "Oh my God, they killed Kenny" cobbles together
Kenny's novelty hit "The bump" and the obvious South Park sample into
a throbbing throwaway disco peach; "Cuban Boy" lays down a copyright
infringing sassy Latin beat; "(Let's get) raunchy" is a slice of
80's chart house from the M/A/R/R/S school with a KLF-lite nitro
injection and "Foggy mountain breakdown" is a hillbilly re-run of
the Grid's "Swamp thing" set in a swaety Go-Go bar. In short,
tongue-in-cheek, happy-go-lucky, tunes-galore, insurrectionary POP!
