ROBOTS & ELECTRONIC BRAINS

Dubb Assassin, March 98 demo (Plastic Spoon) CD

I thought the description "demo of electronic music" was a touch on the broad side...until I listened to the disc. The Assassin has obviously spread his ears around as the sounds on display range from clanking breakbeats ("No control") through Bentley Rhythm Ace funk ("Rapid fire") to almost-commercial synth washes ("Xenodub") but all based on a signature bubbling electro mid-range that keeps the pedal firmly to the metal through the 11 tracks. These demos seem to have common kin with the Big Beat family, the idea of kitchen sink techno--sampling from wherever you can and lumping it all into the mix---but there's also a reluctance to drive straight down route 1 into Clicheville and that makes this a breath of fresh air.
