Elephant, Heyday (Mock Rock) CD
Elephants never forget they say, and this one obviously remembers the
times when Army greatcoats were de rigeur for all aspiring
guitar bands. That and a sound powered by fuel-injected bass and
shards of splintered trebly six-string noise. It's dark without ever
being (self-)pitiful or gloomy but the ghosts of Joy Division and,
perhaps, Suicide, lurk heavily over proceedings. Not that that's a bad
thing as Elephant are sufficiently canny that they've got tunes that
don't just sound like retreads. Take the vicious, brooding "Serial
fucker" for example, a searing blast of vented spleen and abused
instruments with more soul in 6 inches of trunk than most indie bands
manage in 6 months of career.
