ROBOTS & ELECTRONIC BRAINS

King Chubby, Qedeshim (Black Market)

According to the CD inlay, the Qedeshim were "sacred male harlots of Asherah, ancient Semitic mother goddess" whose worship involved procreation and whose prayers used the "rhythm beneath the words, each sound falling back into silence". And silence really is the key here: I've never heard an ambient record like this before. Other ambient music brings you the ambience of somewhere else and adds it to your local ambience. King Chubby takes away the existing ambience, warping and distorting it before piping it back--the absence of sound being as telling as the slight shades of noise that slide out of the speakers.

While you are listening to Qedeshim, no other sounds will be audible. Chilling. Excellent.
