Repulse/Throat, Perennial shutdown (2 t'ten) CD
5 apiece from these two Northern Irish hardcore exponents. Repulse
wring blood from their drum machine, building (Berlin) walls of noise
and riffs and repeatedly dropping anchor to allow a half-speed respite
that serves to enhance the intensity when they crank it up
again. Strangely, they sound nothing like the best comparison I can
think of: Perry Farrell. The similarity is in the drifting vocal and
the confidence to indulge themselves while still writing great songs.
Throat are a more straightforward proposition, more metal in both
structure and guitar tone, but there's plenty of teenage potential,
especially on "Beamer", a squealing, writhing pop chugger.
