Savoy Grand, April 1999
* the name. it sounds like a swwanky hotel to me. did you all meet
sipping cocktails in some opulent lounge bar?
* so where did you meet/the band form?
* did you intend writing such minimal songs from the very
beginning? if not, how did you start?
* are you gentle people?
* and how do you go about making them so minimal anyway?
i think graham told me that he writes them on an acoustic
* are you gentle people?
* and how do you go about making them so minimal anyway?
i think graham told me that he writes them on an acoustic
guitar. do you just deconstruct them from that?
* do you think having people with musical know-how is an
advantage or a hindrance? (i'm thinking of avante garde musos
with no training who claim that no knowledge means they
aren't constrained by convention)
* you told me before that you have classical and jazz musicians
in the band. would they say that they play in a "classical" or
"jazz" style in SG?
* what's the inspiration for your songs? "moving air" in particular?
* you don't play live much. why not? are you too quiet?
* the debut london gig went well. tell us about it.
* you told me before htat you wanted to grow organically,
by word of mouth. is that still the plan? is it working?
* and now you've got a single coming out on pickled
egg. presumably you're very happy about that. who
else has been interested?
* and, i've got to ask, where did the name come from?
savoy is cabbage or an area of SE France and grand is splendid,
dignified, solemn, high ranking. half of that seems right!
