I MET Andy Summers last night! [My girlfriend] Kathy, and I saw his show here in Houston and thought it was great. Bad venue [Instant Karma], but good show nonetheless. His entire set was of his solo jazz/rock/fusion stuff, but the audience was receptive and even threw out a few requests (including yours truly asking for a couple). "I'd like to thank you for requesting songs off my more esoteric albums," he said. His encore set consisted of a kick-ass instrumental version of "Murder By Numbers" and his bass player then sang "Message in a Bottle," which we all joined in and helped him out. It lit up the room!
During the show, this guy came up to us to fix the thermostat which was behind us and I asked whether he was the manager. He was the owner! All I asked him for was a promo poster but he said, "Oh sure we've got lots of promo stuff in the back." After a bit of schmoozing, they clued us in that Andy would do an interview for a local paper and then would be available for autographs! We were first in line.
When the doors opened to this small office, Andy was there on a couch and we walked in. I shook his hand and sat down right next to him. Told him my favorite song of his was "Someone to Talk to" -- an obscure B-side from 1983 -- and he said, "Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that one." I said, "You don't know how much your music has meant to me. I've waited 15 years to get this opportunity!" He thanked me and shook my hand again, then signed Kathy's poster too. She was so gracious. Too bad I was so star-struck I forgot about the camera in my pocket. We left and I've been on Cloud 9 ever since! Now all I have to do is meet Stewart Copeland to complete the trifecta (got Sting's autograph in '89 at "3 Penny Opera").
And you wonder why my e-mail address is Police1Fan...haven't got time for any other band!
As for a song list, I can't remember the order but I think his set consisted of:
and the two encores. He started at 11:15 and ended around 2 AM so I'm definitely missing a few numbers.
