De Melkweg (the Galaxy) - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

by Magda van Santen on April 27, 1998

Sunday 26th. I saw Andy's trio play a great show, despite of the missing crowd.

Andy tried to hide his disappointment playing for an almost empty hall.

Only about 50 people showed up at this gig in this nice small theatre called "De Melkweg" (the Galaxy) and if you are there you're almost in heaven - so when Andy started playing this great improvisation on Murder by Numbers I got some heavenly thoughts about Andy doing an album remaking some great Police songs.

Andy is an excellent guitar-player. The bass-player also is a virtuoso, playing a 5-string and a six-string bassguitar, I never saw anything like this. He also is a funny baldheaded guy.

Beside some songs from the album "The Last Dance Of Mr. X" they played tracks from the older albums and some Jazz-covers. The very last song was Message in a Bottle, a great improvisation, We sang the lyrics.

That's it folks

'Andy Summers Trio' played yesterady evening in Amsterdam. Great concert, the place was empty (probably a 100 people?), my girlfriend got told off by Andy for lighting a cigarette (huh?), he didn't seem to like the flash of the cameras and some guys also got told off cause...'You could hear them talking while the trio was playing a quiet ballad!' Well, at the end of the concert Jerry Watts (Bass) and Andy were hanging around with me and the few guys that waited for him! I got signatures, pictures and his guitar-pen!

I asked him:

Q"what's your favourite Police album?"

A"The first two albums are my favourite!"

Q"May I say that your concert was much much better than any Sting concerts I've seen so far (I saw Sting live 4 times and I'd say that it is more than enough)!

A"Really??? Ha ha Thank you, thank you very much!"

Q"Do you remember being at 'The Berkeley Hotel" in London in September '95 (Wilton Place - Hyde Park Corner)?"

A"The Berk...Oh yeah, a very small, kind of private Hotel? Yes I do remember, I was playing in London at the time!"

Q"So...are your grandparents from Holland?"

A"Yes! My grandparents are from somewhere in Holland. I wouldn't know where in Holland, really?"

and more...

I was at the Andy Summers concert too. I was there with two friends and we have just make a little (or better big) trip from Germany to Amsterdam to see Andy. It was a great show, but realy realy empty. I looked around and count up only 70 people. And what Fabio Sacerdoti write in the last list is true. But I like "empty" concerts, because you think the man on stage is playing only for you.

In Germany we say: The man on stage can go each fan and can say hello.
