Hollywood Athletic Club - Hollywood, (Los Angeles), California, United States

by Ruediger Hoeckel on May 19, 1998

OK, to make this mail a bit Police-related here is a little review of the Andy Summers concert I attended while spending a wonderful holiday in California.

The concert started at 9:10 PM and lasted for about 105 minutes so Andy played one long instead of two short sets. The other musicians were Jerry Watts on bass and a marvellous Bernie Dressel on drums.

He started the gig with a slow blues number I haven't heard so far. Then came "The last dance of Mr. X", "Afro Blues" and "World gone strange".

I don't know the exact sequence of the following songs but if memory serves right the songs were (in no particular order):

  1. Strange Earth
  2. But She
  3. Monk Hangs Ten
  4. Blues For Snake
  5. Big Thing

and maybe one or two more numbers I don't remember.

He played only one encore (you guessed it...), "Message in a bottle".

All in all I was not really satisfied with this concert because I have seen Andy perform much better on his last tour. But this had several reasons: The place did not serve this occasion right, the 60-70 people which were present were far too less for this rather huge hall. In addition, the stage was rather high and the spotlights so bright that Andy merely could not see anybody in the audience (in other words: this club would have deserved to be attended by 500 or more persons).

So Andy made his usual (sometimes dirty) jokes but the response was rather low, only a handful of people cheering and screaming. These were the same guys that danced for the only time during the encore "Message in a bottle".

Musically speaking the only convincing musician was Bernie Dressel, he did a really wonderful job. Jerry Watts wasn't that good, he seemed to be a bit tired. And even Andy made some mistakes I have never seen before (at one point he even failed to grap the guitar neck when changing the position for a new chord...).

For me it was also a bit strange that Andy chose to play at this special date: He just returned a few days before from his European tour and will continue touring in South America (this time playing just the acoustic guitar) so I can see no reason why he should perform the 'Mr. X' tracks once again.

Anyway, in the end a bad Andy Summers concert is still more interesting than the usual Sting concert (MF-period) and as we made a visit at the Copeland's 'Backstage Cafe' in Beverly Hills the next day the time spent was really worth it.

OK, thanks for your time and I hope to 'see' you all very soon!

P.S. For all the 'tape freaks' out there: I did NOT record the show but instead my girl-friend took some pictures. BTW, two guys were there with a film/TV camera so perhaps some snapshots were broadcasted on local TV (or might appear somewhere on video???).
