It seems that Freaks is well copied all over the world. Do continue !!

Some Japanese books came in, funny to see the differences to the originals:

Mercury Falling tour book:
The book is exactly the same as the other books, the only difference is that all the writen parts are in Japanese ofcourse.

The Secret life of Gordon Summner:
There are no pictures in this book, only Japanese text. Cover is totally different than the original. Front cover is Sting with bass, a photo made during the shoot of Stormy Monday. Back photo is from Mercury Falling, Sting walking away, left hand in his pocket. ISBN 4-8456-0130-3

The complete guide to the music of The Police & Sting
This one is a lot better than the one above. Completely different than the UK edition of this small book. Japanese tittle is "Great rock series The Police/Sting". Lots of photo's also different from UK issue, what is very well done is in full colour a rare record section of records and cd's, even with a rare Japanese compilation disc. ISBN4-401-70124-0

FL: A little over a week ago, a year-long undercover operation by the U.S. Customs Service (with assistance from federal prosecutors and the RIAA (of course)) broke up one of the largest bootlegging rings in the world. Pirated recordings were confiscated in undercover raids. 800,000 pirated recordings were seized.

On March 5, 1997 the owners of the Record & Tape Traders chain were charged with possession of bootleg CD's. Last year, their warehouse and four Baltimore stores were raided and several thousand recordings seized. The owners also ran a mail order catalog business called: Yodelin' Pig CD's & Collectibles.

November 1996:
1,000 bootleg CDs and 130 bootleg videos seized at a record store in Manchester England.

July 1996:
More than 87,000 bootleg CD's were seized from 3 New York locations. 10,000 from Second Coming Records, 70,000 from the owner's warehouse of SCR, and 7,000 from Revolver Records. The owners of SCR also ran mail order businesses: Motoring Music (CDs) and Video Jello.

June 1996:
428,000 bootleg CDs and 25,000 vinyl albums were seized from a warehouse in Long Island, NY. The owner was suspected as the largest importer of bootlegs in the country under the businesses of Nostalgia Plus, Nostalgia Records, and C&R Records. 20,000 bootleg CDs were seized in Los Angeles. (Smokey's Disques) The dealer's log book was seized with bootleggers information putting an end to several labels.

2,000 bootleg CDs and videocassettes were seized during a raid at a North London record Fair. (* Source: GrayZone web site and Newsgroup Postings)

Posted on the newsgroup have been announcements about KTS closing its doors, and that the owner, Georgio, "was named among the 40+ federal indictments handed down last Thursday." A few thought it to be an April Fool's Joke, and some still do. On the KTS site there is a notice stating that they are closing down at the end of April and all stock is on sale at their lowest prices. There's been some concern by some traders that after purchasing an order, the confirmation form doesn't list any of the sale prices advertised on the web page.

Usual warnings posted to remind traders not to name any shop or manufacturer information on the newsgroups because of it being monitored by RIAA and Ms. Sherman w/ her "bootbuster" clan, The GrayZone. The information GrayZone gathers is given to clients and has been used for recent bootleg busts. Ironically, *Ms. Sherman got the idea to start up the "business-management concerned" company while visiting an independent record store feeding her own appetite for rarities. (* source: GrayZone)

In july we have the release of Strontium 90, this is the story behind this project, it will definatly be the best release of 1997 for Police fans who like the old day's.

The concert was held on:
28/05/1977 - Paris, Circus Hippodrome

Including 2 POLICE songs: Dead End Job - Be My Girl. It was a "Gong reunion concert" line-up: Peter Blake, Didier Malherbe, Lady June, Strontium 90, Pierre Moelin's Percussion Band, Daevid Allen/Gilli Smyth, Steve Hillage, Gong. The concert sold out (5,000 people).

The totall concert lasted for 10 hours, Each original member of Gong performed a solo set, or jammed with each other, and ofcourse all the original Gong members did a set with each other.

Mike Howlett, who was the bassplayer for Gong from 03-1973 to 06-1976, formed the band Strontium 90, to fill-up one hour of this occasion.

This is the orginal review Phil Suttclife wrote in Sounds on June 11 1977.

"But in the middle of all that the most inappropriate set of the day introduced the world to what might just be a great rock band, Strontium 90. Stewart Coepland , ex- Curved Air, still of Police, checked out the crowd and remarked in amiable mockery, "hey, its the real brown rice scene man, far out". Tim Blake, who is quite partial to brown rice I imagine, introduced Strontium 90 to a friend this way: C'est le rock 'n' roll Anglais tres fort, Mais on n'est pas ici pou critiquer" just as well.

Mike Howlett is Strontium's Gong connection and he has obiviously decided on the direct approach this time round. like grab them by the hair ,ears, throat and goolies all at once. Even some committed Teapot freaks were shaking their heads.

The WOW is the dynamic double (no hyphen) bass from Mike and Sting (vibrant singer and writer also moonlightning from Police, ex Las Exit). An idea I've been craving to see tried out and it works like manpowered earthquake.

In horse racing terms I feel like the trainer who discovvered Red Rum. Its only rock and roll, Its just anaother nag, but then again sometimes you find thoroughbred.

Mike Howlett said cockily to the delighted/puzzled crowd: "C'est autre chose huh? Ca bouge."

This was the line-iup for that day:

Mike Howlett - bass, vocals
Sting - bass, vocals
Stewart - drums
Andy Summers - guitar

The next day in Colmar (also in France) they did the same set again. A few months later Sting and Mike Howlett made a single together as "The Radio actors. The release was called "Nuclear Waste" written by Harry Williamson and on the b-side "Even song".

A few months ago there were some rumours on the xmission list of a bootleg 12" remix from England. probably only 200 copies have been pressed. If you are lucky it wouldn't be that difficult to find this maxi-single. Do not pay too much for this item, I saw a copy for $50.00 at a fair here in Holland but most lucky you can find it for $5.00 at a fair in UK.

It is a one side record, the remix is the Hani Commissioned club mix from the Sister moon UK promo (AMPMDJ 40).

In 1995 there was an Australia only release of Their greatest hits by a unknown band which performs Police/sting songs. Very strange, the cover has a photo of Sting as a sola artist and The Police as a group, but the music on the cd is just a cover band.

Sometimes I am surprised by a "new" promo that has been released years ago. This time the suprise comes from Italy.

Sting- 12" Muoio per te (same b-side)
Italy A&M 5001710

front cover has in large letter STING and the Italian lyrics of the song. Back cover has only some record information, released in 1991

On March 1 1997 there was a special benefit concert from the Elton John AIDS foundation in New York. Here are all the details of that concert.

It is almost impossible to know what Stewart is doing all the time. Latest TV-theme he wrote was for a BBC series called "Insiders". This lastest only 6 episodes. If people have more info on this than do let me know.

A few weeks back our friend Lithium Sunset did some homework. Because of the fact that some people have no e-mail and receive FREAKS on floppy here it will be again.

Hi Erwin,
last week I got this obscure "vinyl":

Russian transparent flexi of "Don't stand so close to me"

ever heard of this one?

Yes I did, there are some more of these boot flexi discs from Eastern Europe. Very difficult to put them on your turn table. I think there will be a least 30 different ones, happy hunting !

ANDY SUMMERS ON JIMI HENDRIX

Andy Summers has enjoyed a long and varied musical career beginning in the `60s with Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, Dantalion's Chariot, Soft Machine and Eric Burdon And The Animals. In the early `70s Andy studied classical guitar at the University Of California then returned to the UK where he played with Kevin Coyne and then Kevin Ayers. Andy found fame and fortune in the late `70s and early `80s with the Police who sold over 75 million albums worldwide. Since the Police split up in the mid `80s, Andy has balanced his creative talents between music, painting and photography. His latest release is a solo album entitled `Synaesthesia' (1995).

Whilst playing in Zoot Money's Big Roll Band Andy was thought to have jammed with Jimi Hendrix during his first day in London, Saturday 24 September 1966, at Zoot Money's house, 11 Gunterstone Road, Fulham.

UniVibes: Did you jam with Jimi Hendrix on his first day in London?

Andy Summers: Not on his first day - actually, no. I used to see him around `cause I was very connected with all the people at the time. I actually jammed with him once in Los Angeles in some studio [T.T.G.], somewhere in Hollywood. Actually, I played lead and he played bass, can you believe! It was weird.

UV: What do you remember about it?

AS: Well, I know what I was doing at the time - I was driving around Hollywood with somebody, hanging around... Like the lout that I was at the time! And I walked into this studio. We knew Jimi was there - I was friends with him and Mitch and Noel. I walked into the control room and he was just... It was quite impressive - he was just leaning against the glass window, he was on the other side, with a cigarette in his mouth and he was just kind of leaning up very laconically, just shredding on his guitar... Pretty amazing! Yeah, I remember the image quite vividly. Anyway, I came in and we sat around for a while then we played for a bit. Noel wasn't there actually - it was Mitch and Jimi.

UV: What did you jam on, can you remember?

AS: Oh, I can't remember! Probably played the blues I would imagine.

UV: There's a story that on his first day in London he went over to Zoot Money's basement.

AS: Right.

UV: And supposedly you were there...

AS: Well, we lived together, yeah.

UV: And then you had a jam along with...

AS: No, I don't think that's true, actually. He was around and he did come over sometimes. I was friends with Chas Chandler who had sort of `discovered' him and brought him over. I remember him calling me and telling me he's got this amazing guy. The first time I actually saw him was... I went down to a place called, I think it was Blaises in the Cromwell Road. It was a club that we all used to go to and I walked in and there he was onstage playing with Brian Auger [possibly Tuesday 29 September 1966]. At the time, of course, it was amazing. He had a white Strat and as I walked in he had it in his mouth and he had a huge afro and he had on a sort of buckskin jacket with fringes that were to the floor, I mean... Yeah, it was intense and it was really great. It kind of turned all the guitarists in London upside down at the time. Yeah, I remember when it all started up.

UV: Have you got any other anecdotes about Jimi at all?

AS: About Jimi? Umm, I dunno... I was involved with a lot of people that were with him, particularly Chas and Mike Jeffery. And then I was in a band called Soft Machine and we had the same manager. So, you know, I saw him in London. I remember going up and sitting in his bedroom with him and sitting on the bed while he played the guitar. And we were all out in LA and then they were all in the house here and I went to that house and then I was in the studio... It was just like we were all around at the same time - we're going back a while now but... You know, I had a girlfriend at the time who was best friends with this girl that he was going out with and... I dunno, it was all just... We were right in the middle of it all and he was one of the figures in this scene at the time.

Just picked up the following from
http://www.addict.com/html/lofi/MNOTW/display-news.cgi?97-05-01#Police

Fortunately we will have the "Every Little Thing" Demo and Ziggy Marley and Sting with "One World (Not Three)"

Rare Tracks From The Police Before They Were The Police

The original demo for "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" is included on Police Academy.

Addicted To Noise Senior Writer Gil Kaufman reports: Chances are the name Strontium 90 doesn't really ring a bell for most music fans. But what if we told you the names of the three members of this long-forgotten mid-70's band were Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers?

As part of a 20th anniversary celebration of The Police, Sting's label, Panagea, in cooperation with Ark 21 (run by Copeland's brother, ex-I.R.S. Records head Miles Copeland, who also manages Sting), will be releasing an album called Police Academy (July 29) from the group's pre-stardom outfit.

Formed in 1976 by the trio and ex-Gong prog rocker Mike Howlett, Strontium 90 never got a chance to release any albums before the group mutated into the Police, but this 10-song compilation, based on tapes the members had stored and forgotten about for years, collects some never-before-released live material and demos that shed considerable light on the rock & reggae sound that would make the Police superstars.

Three of the songs ("Electron Romance," "Lady of Delight" and "Three O'Clock Shot") are from a May 28, 1976 show that took place in a circus tent in Paris in front of a crowd of 6,000 who had come to see various ex-Gong members performing with their new bands. The rest of the songs were produced by Howlett, who also played bass and include "New World Blues," "Towers Tumble," "Visions of the Night," (which appeared on The Police's 1993 four-disc set Message in a Box), studio versions of the live tracks and the first demo of "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic."

A source at Panagea said the "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" demo was recorded on a 4-track at Howlett's studio by Sting, who was eager to get the song on tape while it was fresh in his mind. "He went to Howlett's studio and played everything on the song," explained the source. "He recorded it with a cheap microphone, using an acoustic guitar and an African drum because he wanted to get it down as fast as possible."

July 29 will also see the release of an all-reggae tribute to The Police called Regatta Mondatta, also on Pangea/Ark 21. The featured tracks are: Aswad ("Roxanne"), Chaka Demus and Pliers ("Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"), Betty Wright ("Every Breath You Take"), Pato Banton featuring Sting ("Spirits in the Material World"), Shinehead ("Jamaican in New York"), Ziggy Marley and Sting ("One World (Not Three)"), Maxi Priest ("Message in a Bottle"), Steel Pulse ("Can't Stand Losing You"), Los Pericos ("Darkness"), Sly & Robbie featuring Amblique ("Walking on the Moon"), Sheila Hylton ("The Bed's Too Big Without You") and Jazz Jamaica featuring Courtney Pine with an instrumental version of "Wrapped Around Your Finger."

From: "Rock Steady"

(this review has been cut,E.K.)

Here is the set list, with my comments!

Samba band (they came in from the back, couldn't see em!)--it was shor and I think they were wearing funky outfits.

Sting, Elton John, James Taylor--It's a Lovely Day--they did this a capella I think, it was really a beautiful song and a LOVELY way to start the event!

Bobby McFerrin-Carnival of Animals---TOO LONG! Bobby just made all these animal noises, one after the other, after the other....zzzzzz...

Lyle Lovett--If I Had a Boat--not a huge Lyle fan, but he was ok--actually I think I missed this song when I was out talking to the manager.

Sting and Jimmy Nail-Waters of Tyne--this guy was in the movie Evita-I missed most of this song, too, too bad coz the end sounded great! I think this is on Carnival so we can all hear it! (I'm picking up my copy tomorrow!).

Bonnie Raitt--If I loved You--Lovely ballad she dedicated to her parents.

JT--Another Day--he said he wrote it just for this evening--he said, it's a new song, but it sounds just like all my old ones! It was nice.

Lyle, Sting, Elton & Bonnie--Long Tell Texan--this was very funny! Sting came out with a HUMONGOUS flourescent green cowboy hat! Looked like a cartoon! Too bad I really couldn't see how he looked in it, but it looked ridiculous from up on high! I didn't care for the song very much though.

Shawn Colvin--All Through the Night--This was a beautiful lullabye!

Zucchero--Va Penisero--by Verdi--it was ok, but Zucchero was funny, he said he was doing this song by Verdi, and he hopes we don't hate it! When he introduced him, Sting said that when he was walking with Zucchero in Italy, people were climbing over Sting to get to Zucchero, meaning that nobody noticed him b/c of what a big star Zucchero is in Italy. I wasn't very impressed with this song.

Maxim Venegerov--La Ronde Des Lutins--I think this was a violin solo, but I can't remember.

Franca Sciuto-speech--this is the chairperson of the Rainforest Foundation. I tried very hard to pay attention to what she was saying, but she is very old (or at least sounded it) and her speech was BORING, I went to powder my nose.

Stevie Wonder-If It's Magic-Stevie sounded great, not one of my favorite songs, it was a slow ballad.

Stevie gave Sting and Trudie each a present--identical twin somethings, but I couldn't hear it, and I sure as heck couldn't see it! Well, you know what they say, it's the thought that counts!

Salvation Army Band--Onward Christian Soldiers--nice.

Elton--abide with me--this was a song from his childhood, he said they played it before every soccer game and with the brass band, it always brought tears to his eyes--very beautiful.

INTERMISSION--This is when I made my move, and it was a good thing because Sting was waiting for me to be able to see him before he sang too much!

Garry Shandling--extremely funny--made fun of how long Bobby McFerrin was on for when he had only 12 minutes. He said they only asked him here to have someone Jewish on the show--to show that the Rainforests affect everyone!

Sting, Elton, James, Bonnie, and Lyle--Get Ready--this is an old classic--Temptations maybe? It was GREAT! And now I was sitting in the front row!!!!! Sting was wearing dark trousers, a black vest with a black leather jacket over it--he looked devine as ever. The first half he was wearing a long black coat with tails. Anyway, his hair is growing a bit and what can I say? The man looks great!

Elton--My Girl--the old classic, very well done!

Elton--My Guy--he said, just to balance things out!!! LOL! This was the second highlight of the show for me, I couldn't stop laughing the whole time, and oh, I forgot to say that for all these songs in the second half the remaining 5 stars were sitting on the sides of the stage singing backup, and Sting had a tambourine, that for the most part he wasn't playing, but one time he banged it on his head! So cute! Anyway, while Elton was singing this, everyone on stage was laughing too!

Lyle Lovett-Ain't that peculiar--cute

Bonnie and Elton--Love Letters--this was a song that Elton wrote I think he said! Anyway, at one point Elton was moving very sexy towards Bonnie and kind of rubbing up real close to her--after the song, Bonnie goes, I need a towel! You sure could have fooled me on that one, Elton! FOr this song, Bonnie also played her guitar.

Bonnie and JT--Barefootin--both playing their guitars and singing--more uptempo, very nice!

JT--Roadrunner--I never heard this song, the lyrics reminded me of Travelin Man, it was ok.

Sting--Ain't Too Proud To Beg

Sting--Tears of a Clown

OK, this was most definitely the HIGHLIGHT!!!! These are 2 of my favorite songs in the world, and he did a GREAT job! At this point, he took off his nice leather jacket, and was just wearing this skin tight, high collared vest. All I can say is MMMMMMMMMMMM! Anyway, he was dancing around, banging his tambourine, and having a great time, I was in heaven! He did a great Smokey Robinson impersonation for Tears of a Clown! Oh! I am still hearing this wonderful song in my head!

Stevie--Higher Ground-a classic!

Stevie and JT--Knock on Wood--and another!

Stevie and Sting--Sting sits down next to Stevie at his piano, on my side of the stage, took a picture! And they were talking real low to each other, Stevie: what to you want to do? Sting: I don't know...(long pause).. let's do one of your songs! Stevie: want to do that city thing? Sting: yeah, let's do that! It was called Living for the City, I didn't really know it, it was OK.

Finale--Everyone--As--I don't know whose song this is, maybe Stevie's? It was a great song and they sang it for a while, getting the audience into it. At the end Sting introduced everybody, and brought out Trudie--she was wearing that same green Oriental looking dress she was wearing to the oscars I think--I just saw her in it in some mag--anyway, she looked GORGEOUS!!!!! Her hair was beautiful-pulled back in some flowery arrangement--I took a picture of her too!

So that was it! Hope you all enjoyed my little synopsis!

Oh, by the way, Brandford's name was in the program, but I do not believe he was there!

THANKS FOR COMING, THANKS FOR LISTENING, I'LL WRITE TO YOU AGAIN, GOOD NIGHT!!!!
