Philipshalle - Duesseldorf, Germany

by Martin Nickel January 23, 1997

approx. 6000 people, sold out

This day we arrived quite late at the hall. But at 5.30 p.m. there were only about 50 people queuing outside. The doors were opened at 6:30.

Soraya [38 Min]

Well, the set of Soraya was the same as the day before in Bielefeld. She and her band did quite good job. During her show Soraya told the audience that there's a cowboy in front of the stage ... everybody thought on the same guy, but no he wasn't. He was there, but he lost his cowboy hat in Brussels ];-)

Today, most of the time, the show was "business as usual". Again...the same set ! What a shame!

All in all, the audience was better tonight (is that something to wonder?...the first row was definitely in the hand of the DSA) and Sting was in a good mood and joking around more than in Bielefeld. Dominic was in much better mood as usual. He made many eye contacts and smiles with the DSA headquarter just in front of him.

Sting spoke more german than the day before. Especially with Vinnie during YSTM: "Vinnie, kommen Sie hier her...schnell, schnell!" [Vinnie, come up here, rapido, rapido !"] he called Vinnie to come into the light in front of the stage)

The setlist [114 Min]:

  1. The Hounds Of Winter
  2. I Hung My Head
  3. I Was Brought To My Senses
  4. Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot
  5. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
  6. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
  7. Seven Days
  8. Mad About You
  9. You Still Touch Me
  10. Fields Of Gold
  11. I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying
  12. Synchronicity II
  13. Roxanne
  14. Bring On The Night / When The World Is Running Down...
  15. Demolition Man
  16. Englishman In New York
  17. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  18. Every Breath You Take
  19. Lithium Sunset
  20. Fragile

During LYSBP Kenny took again the second voice and the band and the technicians had a lot of fun to confuse Kenny. He was always smiling in his typical and lovely way and they were not able to bring him into confusion.

When Sting invited the band members to the front of the stage he made some jokes and nice smiles with Vinnie. Maybe it was only show, but it really did not look like they had trouble as it was reported some time ago.

Before ISHICSC Sting took a couple on stage. The lady came up first and translated some sentences. Sting joked: "First time I was playing in this hall is about 20 years ago. Today I'm only 10 years older!". Then Sting asked her "Are you divorced?"..."No". "Are you engaged?" "Yes." "Is your boyfriend in the audience?" "Yes, he's there ..." and Sting took up this really huge guy. Both were very good, especially the beastly boy. He sung one verse of ISHICSC ("I took a walk alone last night...") and had the hall quickly on his side.

For 2 or 3 times during the show Sting slipped with his fingers over his bass frets while he was waiting for Danny to bring another bass. I've never seen this in the shows before. He was very impatient in a funny way.

Before the 2nd encore when Danny gave the Chet Atkins to Sting, they had some problems with the cartridge on Sting's back and Sting started to play while Danny was working on that. Sting made some funny grimaces.

After Fragile many jelly babies were thrown on the stage. The band, especially Vinnie, was kind of irritated. With a little bitter smile he made a shooting sign to the audience.

All in all a nice show, unfortunately nothing special, no surprises. There's only a little hope for changes in the coming shows.

Hope to meet some of you in Hannover and Frankfurt.
