Maimarkthalle - Mannheim, Germany

Exactly 3 years after a great live performance of a great Sting with a not so great co-singer in Hannover. I was today at my first concert of the BND tour in Mannheim.

The Concert was held in the Maimarkthalle, a big hall built for exhibitions. And accordingly was the sound - very undiscriminating and placed particular emphasis on bass. I never could follow Sting's bass-playing like on this evening.

Due to traffic jam I came to the hall some minutes after 8.00 p.m. (the official beginning time as stated on the ticket stub) - just right for the first notes of "A Thousand Years"!!! Yes - there was no support act!!!

I had a little hope Sting will play a song more instead - but this became not true.

I think most of you know the reviews of previous concerts - so only some notes to some songs:

Moon Over Bourbon Street - Sting started singing with his "own voice". But he got into the "Louis Armstrong style" for some lines of the third verse.
Tomorrow We'll See - This song got a new place after MOBS. Here it fits because of the similar atmosphere of the two songs.
If I Ever Lose - On the beginning there was something I don't remember exactly (I got no DAT to confirm this, sorry), but it seemed to me some of the band wasn't in the right song! Only when Sting began singing and with some heavy bumps on the bass drum they came together. But I can be wrong. Or maybe: "It was not a bug - it was a feature" - as Martin Vauchel reported in his review on the concert in Grenoble on January 17th. On another song I remember some rhythmical uncertainties of the band - but I don't remember the song.
Message In A Bottle - only Sting on stage with an acoustic guitar. He restricted himself to sing only the "answering verses" of the song, the audience did the rest. And they loved it.

Sting tried to say some words in German. But it was only the usual "Guten Abend, Mannheim", "Vielen Dank und auf Wiedersehen, Mannheim", "Herr ... and Herr ..." (introducing the band).

It was a nice evening. Not very special but impressive.
