Cafe Bourbon Street - Amsterdam, The Netherland [fan club meeting]

by Martin Nickel on March ?, 1996

On Saturday at 11:30 we went to the Cafe Bourbon Street (what a coincidence) and met our friends in front of the small cafe. It was a great moment, because we've waited so long to see all the people in reality instead of virtuality. There were many aahhhs, oooohhs etc ... We were all a little bit nervous and curious what would happen the next hours.

Exactly at 12:00 the door opened for us fans. At the door they checked our membership of the DSA (Dutch Sting Association).

We were about 100 people in the cafe. On the right side was the bar and on the left side T-Shirts and souvenirs were sold.

In front of the Bourbon Street Cafe was a small stage where some equipment was installed. OK, Ed Citroen was scheduled for this afternoon, but we still had the hope that ...

...and yes, suddenly no one was let out or in the Bourbon Street Cafe. It was about 13:00 while Sting and Dominic came in, forced their way through the fans and entered the small stage. Round about 100 people in the Bourbon Street Cafe became crazy...

Sting scraped his head and asked what they should play...then he adjusted the microphone...

...and they started with a rocking version of "Lithium Sunset" with Dom on the guitar.

Ed "Lemon" Citroen, surely one of the biggest Sting fans around the world, entered the stage and brought a homage to Sting, who was sitting on the right side of the stage on the piano chair, honestly listening to Ed. Edīs song was in dutch and english and was about his life as a fan and how he was influenced by Sting. [He was not the only one, I think]

While Ed started to play the first chords of "Message In A Bottle" the audience started singing VERY loud "Just a castaway an island lost at sea....". Sting had his difficulties to get through with his voice...he had to give everything...and he did! Congrats Mr. Sumner!

Interview with Sting (It was hard to write down all pieces of the puzzle. Most of it is here but it's still incomplete. But I'm working on it...your help is appreciated, specially from the people who asked Sting something.):

Peterlien: Is there anybody who wants to ask Sting something?
No ?? Ask him something !
Fan: Do you sing "Angel Eyes" tonight ?
Sting: What ???
Fan: "Angel Eyes" from "Leaving Las Vegas"
Sting: No!
Fan: I read something about "La Belle" as a protest
                     against the nuclear tests
Sting: ... France, because I love France very much ... french
art, food, culture, but I'm not a fan of the nuclear
                     tests.
Audience: We neither!
Fan: Sting, with which artist do you want to do a duet
Sting Aehm, with Vinnie Calouita.
Audience: Do it !
Sting: Actually Dominic, Vinnie and I have been developed
                     this modern music aehm ...
Sting: It's not finished ... our second ...
Peterlien: I buy the album !
                     OK, anybody else ?
Fan: Yes, here!
My favourite venue in the world is ..... in Glasgow
do you want to play there ... you think ...
Sting: It's the strangest dutch accent I've ever heard.
Actually I love in Glasgow "The Apollo". Do you
                     know "The Apollo"?
Fan : Sting I have a question. Why did you write the song
"Let You Soul Be Your Pilot" or for whom did you
write it? It's my song for now.
Sting: Is it?
Fan: Yeah!
Sting: OK, there is someone that is actually specific about,
but I don't want to mention who that is, but it's
                     someone who .... aeehh ...
Fan: It's your wife!
Sting: No, it's not my wife, it's actually someone who's
ending, near the end of his life and aeeh, you know,
it means a lot to me and him.
Fan: I want to thank you for writing this song. Thank You
Fan: Sting, I once wrote a devil in your book
                     I hope you didn't find it. It's terrible. ...
Sting: ...
Fan: Sting, I want to thank you for writing the song
"Englishman in New York". That is the song that
I became a very great fan of you.
Sting: ...
Fan: Sting, from Barcelona, Spain. Do you have plans to
play in Spain, as any song in Spanish
Sting: Aaeh, I sang in Spanish before.
Fan: Yeah, but you have plans to make now a ... song in
                     spanish from the new album?
Sting: ....
Fan: I want to ask you something about singing.
Sting: About What?
Fan: About Singing!
Sting: ... make my chest big, sing for longer ...
Fan: Have you ever read the Sting newsgroup on the
                     Internet?
Sting: I think so and I've decided never to look in. It's
                     pretty crazy the Internet.
Some of it's good some of it is bad.
Actually I was online one night in New York, answering.
There were over 5000 questions that night.
I'm not online every night it's not my thing, I'm
                     playing music
Fan: You've got some folk influences on your new album
Sting: I came from newcastle ...
Peterlin: You wanna play two more songs?
Audience: ooooohhooooohhoooo
Sting: Hmm, OK.
Peterlin: Not "Every Breath You Take" !!!
Audience: "Jeremiah Blues" !!! "Jeremiah Blues" !!!

While the audience was shouting and shouting Dominic started with the incredible intro of I Hung My Head. They did a REALLY GREAT version of this song. Sting's voice was unbelievable.

Then they said "Goodbye" for a few hours (round about 13:40). They had to go because they wanted to work on the new video of "You Still Touch Me", which was filmed in Amsterdam. Fortunately Mrs. "W." found them on a beautiful place only a few streets from the Bourbon Street Cafe away. Sting was driving on a dutch bicycle and driving on a boat through the channels of Amsterdam.

On their way out I was shouting to Dominic who had passed me already. He turned his head around and came back. I told him about my little promotion of his solo debut album ... and he already knew the link to his page and my name. Oooops !!! Crazy! Hope to be always in his bookmark file ...

After all that we straightly went to the Paradiso, which was only a few steps away. Some die hard fans were already sitting at the front door. We decided also to do so ...
