Okay, here we go again with the set-list for last night's show at Ahoy in Rotterdam (The Netherlands):
Support: Nathalie Merchant (ex-10,000 Maniacs) - 35 minute set
Duration: 1h 46m
Quick comments:
A shuffled set-list compared to Sunday night (and Paradiso). Few songs retain their position, even allowing for the two songs (Fields Of Gold and All Four Seasons) that have been dropped. Maybe it was just a case of the second night at a venue usually being better, but this order certainly seemed tighter and better paced -- I guess we'll have to wait for the boots to find out.
Since no new songs were added in (in fact, quite the reverse!), this re-emphasises my suspicions about the Moscow set-lists that have been posted. Details, if you have them, please.
Kenny Kirkland's solo in When The World ... was stunning again, and, although I've seen Sting do it loads of times, the current version of Roxanne continues to impress (and I'm not much of a fan of that song usually).
Dominic Miller disappointed yet again -- maybe the Grateful Dead logo on his guitar leads him to believe that he is better than he is!?! (While I liked his playing in `91, his playing in `93 and `96, so far, has been lacking in imagination. Also, why he feels the need to pose to the audience all the time, beats me.)
The names of the two horn players are Clark Gayton and Butch Thomas. These are the two guys who were at Paradiso too, so I have no idea why the names Jonathan Scott and Phillip Veacock appear in the programme. Anybody who is maintaining a `96 tour database should take that into account.
Some of the arrangements to the newer songs are starting to loosen up, so that bodes well for future concerts; however, Sting doesn't seem prepared to let the band open up to the degree he did in 1991 (a pity as far as I'm concerned). The three new songs showing the biggest departures at the moment are: LYSBYP, 25 To Midnight and Lithium Sunset (which is much longer than the album version).
So, if you're a fan of the new album, there is much to like about the current tour. If not, you'd be best advised to stay at home.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that Sting has been in excellent voice at the shows I've seen so far.
Should also say that Nathalie Merchant's show was very enjoyable both nights. While not a big fan of 10,000 Maniacs, I do like her voice (even if she does sound like a thousand other U.S. female vocalists!). Her version of Fever was especially good, but then I'm a sucker for Hammond B-3.
Well, that's it for me until Paris; keep the set-lists coming in.
