Palais Omnisports Le Bercy - Paris, France

by Sean on April 22, 1993

Hey all, just got back from three weeks on the continent visiting my fiance in Paris. For a very late Valentine's gift she bought me surprise tickets to one of the Sting shows at Bercy in Paris March 30. Can you tell why I love this woman? I thought I'd share with you my impressions of the show, the set list, etc., so _WARNING_ : if you would feel disappointed knowing anything about the upcoming shows, just press the ole "d" key and delete this puppy, because I'd feel bad if I ruined anything-I'm setting this down for posterity's sake only. In fact, I'm still amazed I got to see it. Sting hasn't gotten to the states yet, has he? As an American student in Scotland for the semester, I'm getting home in July, just about 3 days after his concert at home. So I guess I'm a bit lucky.

Time: 1:45

Here's the list:

  1. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  2. Heavy Cloud, No Rain
  3. Love Is Stronger Than Justice
  4. Seven Days
  5. A Day In The Life
  6. Fields Of Gold
  7. Synchronicity II
  8. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
  9. Roxanne
  10. It's Probably Me
  11. Shape Of My Heart
  12. St Augustine In Hell (segue to)
  13. Straight To My Heart
  14. Englishman In New York
  15. King Of Pain
  16. Bring On The Night (segue to)
  17. When The World Is Running Down...
  18. Penny Lane
  19. She's Too Good For Me
  20. Nothing 'Bout Me
  21. Every Breath You Take

Comments: What a show. Of course he left us breathless (we were the only ones who sang along when we felt like it). The audience didn't stand the whole time except for the end-luckily we were against a wall. They also weren't too fond of dancing. Oh Well. The band itself was the same as the Soul Cages tour. They sounded just as tight, with only a few glitches in the beginning, as I think this was only a few dates into the European tour. The band also sounded freer in what it could do with the music. Sting mostly played his Fender Jazz, while Dominic alternated between different Fernandes-one was this really amazing looking nylon-stringed with an f-hole. I was personally kind of hoping for someone to play the chromatic harmonica live, but I guess it's unrealistic for touring. Oh yeah, he did a second encore, but you all know I think which one that was. I was hoping for Purple Haze again, but it was just a pipe dream. So he played 10 of the 12 new songs, leaving out my personal favorite Everybody Laughed, but overall a really solid show. The 2 Beatles surprised me, as did everyone else. I'm not sure to what extent he tailored the show to the French, as the Beatles and Stones are going through another so-called "revival" over there. I won't say who did the narration for St Augustine, but it surprised me and seemed to really confuse the French audience, hee hee. The only other thing-someone threw a stuffed animal at Sting during the last song in the regular set: it hit his bass and made a rather funky sound. He got kinda pissed off and threw it right back, but after the song he asked for it back "le chien, s'il vous plait, le chien...", it flew back up, and he gave it to a roadie, provoking really cheesy ooohs and aaahs from the audience. Sorry for the length, people. Just thought you'd like to know all this.

Sorry folks, it must be ignorance on my part. He ended with Fragile, just as he did at the Soul Cages show I saw, so I just assumed that he's been always closing with that one. Sorry. I would've like to have heard the acoustic Message, is it the same version on the end of Bring on the Night? Oh, one more thing I forgot to add-he did all the Police songs in their entirety pretty much, not like the medleys he did during the Soul Cages. Damn it was cool. Well, have a pleasant weekend all!
