Just returned fr Carnegie Hall. It was a great concert! Show started close to 7:30 and ended at 10:15 with a 15 min. intermission. Our seats were pretty bad -back of the first balcony($150). I'll write up the report as best I can but I don't know the name of a couple of songs, so then I'll use a [?] and I'll say "the boys" when I refer to Sting, J.T., Elton & Billy, collectively.
Then Trudie spoke about the Rainforest Foundation (check website for info)
INTERMISSION
Dan Akroyd thanked Sam Moore (Sam & Dave) for all the great music he's written.
Sting forgot who he was supposed to introduce & Trudie came out & whispered in his ear. She told audience "he got it right in rehearsal" Elton said to Sting "you don't know who's coming out next" to which Sting replied,"you already came out". Elton then walked over & gave Sting a big kiss.
We waited across fr Stage Door, saw Sting, Trudie, Miles w/ some of Sting's kids,James, Tom, Percy, Macy,Stevie, Impressions, Sam & Martha. Billy waved to us fr dressing room window above stage door. (Note to Susan: After you left I spoke w/ Janice Pendarvis; Then Branford came out I said Hi and touched his arm. He said "How you doing, babe "& leaned over to me and I gave him a kiss! He's so sweet!
Elton had on a long black "undertaker" coat w/ zebra print lining & in 2nd Act changed to white suit w/ bright pink shirt & shoes. Sting had on a dark brown"Dr. Evil" suit (with that tank top underneath). Billy & Elton looked a bit slimmer. Billy was full of energy, really enjoying himself.
Sting seemed a bit tired.
'Hope to be there again next year (in better seats)!
Now everyone, go to the Rainforest Foundation website to read about their accomplishments and the exciting new things they're involved in.
Ok gang...Here it is...After the Kenny Kirkland Tribute last year, and my Today Show experience (for those who remember both), I bring you yet another fantastic tale. Mom and I showed up at the stage door around 3:00...There were a few other fans gathered, including this one lunatic who wouldn't shut up about Ricky Martin...I told her that she couldn't have loved him for more than two or three years now, and that I have loved Sting forever. This didn't make her very happy...Nonetheless, the NYPD cop I made friends with told me that all the talent was already inside and was about to eat a meal together....With that, Ricky Martin came out, signed a few autographs and left..All in about 15 seconds. I was quite happy this woman did not get her autograph...Anyway, this meant only one thing...I had to go in. I noticed that groups of young people were coming out with these carnegie hall stickers...After asking enough people, I found out that high school music classes and some other groups
got to go listen to rehearsals. So I followed group after group until I finally got a sticker from this one woman....With that, I walked through the stage door and straight into the main stage where Trudie was doing rehearsals for her speech...I heard the whole thing from about six feet away from her with my arm on the stage while she was doing it...Pretty cool. Figuring I wouldn't get to meet her then and having more important tasks at hand (Sting), I took the elevator up one flight to see what was around. As I got in, I was lucky enough to find one of the master room lists for carnegie with all the dressing rooms and other suites listed...I'll scan it later...Sting, Trudie, and Elton shared the master suite. I tried getting in there, but it was only the three of them and Miles and one or two other people while they were getting dressed. Fortunately, the artist dining area was directly across the hallway from the suite, so I figured I would try that. Just as I walked in, James Taylor was walking out.Keeping in mind that I was the ONLY non artist or band member or agent in the entire backstage area, I couldn't be too crazy. I stopped James and said "If I don't see you later, best of luck on the show" He said thanks and shook my hand. I also told him that even though I spend my life in music, there's still something different and great about his and that my parents were fans even before I was. He didn't ask who I was with or who i played for, but apparently thought I was one of the musicians. That was cool...The only other artists in the room then were Martha Reeves and Macy Gray. I went and got some food from the most amazing buffet I have ever seen in my life...Macy was all by herself so I asked if I could join her. She was having the same soup as me...some weird but good lentil curry soup. The weird soup was pretty much the basis of our whole conversation...She was really nice...I left after I finished my bowl and wished her luck in the show. I went back downstairs one flight
and heard Billy Joel playing classical piano in his dressing room. About three or four other people were listening. Nobody seemed to care. He was done and about to come out so everybody went back to work and I had to leave so I wouldn't look to crazy.I tried stealing a song list from the stage, but got caught so I had to leave it there. Oh well. It was about 6:35 and the show started at 7:00 so I decided to go back down to meet mom, who was nice enough to wait outside this whole time. For all those that remember my mom from Today show...she says hi!!! The story gets much, much better later, but onto the show for now...
The show opened with Sting, then James, then Elton, then Billy coming on stage and singing one line at a time. Full ensemble then sang together.
Branford played sax the whole show and Janice Pendarvis sang background vocals. Other than that, the band had some other famous people in it, but noone Sting related. The music was phenomenol but the vocals were not loud enough...Softer voices like Sting, James, and Elton got hidden in the music...I can't remember all the songs off hand, but notables included Sting doing tear's of a clown, dancing in the street with gladys knight, and others.....Surprises....Dan Akroyd showed up to do Soul Man...Stevie Wonder came on towards the end, and everyone went nuts...There are too many things to even begin to write about..Here is then entire list of performers on the night. Billy Joel, James taylor, Ricky Martin, Tom Jones, Martha Reeves, Macy Gray, Gladys Knight, Sting, Elton, Percy Sledge, Sam Moore (Sam and Dave fame), The Impressions, and Stevie and Dan Akroyd unannounced..Amazing music all around...I will try to make up a song list later...the show ended and the whole audience left..except me...I used the backstage pass again and went back up...I am leaving to go have lunch with my best friend now...so the rest will wait for later...
TIDBITS INCLUDE--- me, sting, miles, this woman ann, jake sumner, and kate sumner standing in a room alone for 10 minutes... me with my arm on stevie wonder's shoulder telling him I loved the show...me running to tell security not to leave yet cause coco wasn't on the elevator...and others....All in all...an amazing evening....and for those who made it this far in my message...just a little clip of sting and his humor...the best part is yet to come....
