"It's a big enough umbrella, but it's always me that ends up getting wet!"
That was what 60.000 people might have thought as they were waiting in the pouring rain for Sting to appear. I didn't expect it to be an easy job for him and the band, as they were headed by the German punk rockers "Die toten Hosen" who performed a fantastic show, including a climb on the stage roof by lead singer "Campino" - the audience went completely nuts. The break in between the bands seemed endless but finally, 15 minutes late, we heard Vinnie's powerful intro into "Hounds of Winter". A great start indeed! The whole concert had an incredible atmosphere despite the weather. The sound was brilliant and the horns performed good music and a perfect show, running around, playing with the audience and - every now and then - Sting joined them. Everybody seemed to be in a really good mood. One outstanding moment was Kenny's keyboard solo on "When the world is running down...". I can't tell how long it was, but it sure seemed endless to us, almost everybody freaked out. The whole concert was energetic and lively and it was big fun !!
Here's the setlist for the first part of the show:
After the "Englishman in New York" faded out with a nice little sax solo by Butch the audience shouted for more. A while later, Sting came back on stage and we had this little dialogue:
Sting: You want more ?
Audience: Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhh
Sting: Nein, nein ... DAS ist Scheisseeehh! Nock einmal!!! (No, no...THAT was shit! Once again!!!)
Audience: Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh !!!!!
Well, we convinced him and they continued with the following three songs:
"Lithium Sunset" was once again far better than the album version. This little song has really grown up!!! Finally, as we expected, Sting closed the concert with "Fragile". It was a pity that the audience was animated to clap their hands. This song only works in silence, I think....
Although the concert only lasted about 90 minutes it was worth all the travelling and waiting and the colds we got.... Good work boys !!!
The band:
As Dagmar was telling in her review this Sting gig was really great, although it was raining all the time. But we didn't mind. The gig was just faboulous, i really loved 'Seven Days' it was improved much comparable to Ahoy last March. Sting included a saxophone part in the song, great to see Sting playing together with the saxophoneplayer, they just run across the stage all the time, which we did not see in Ahoy (Rotterdam) where they had to stand next to Vinnie. I also loved 'Englishman in New York', which contained a great rap-part of the saxophoneplayer. Especially the end of the song suprised me, Sting and band left the stage, leaving the saxophoneplayer on stage. He did played the end of the song as on the '...Nothing like the sun' CD. The best song of the set for me was 'When the world' It lasted for ever, great solo by Kenny!!!! What a keyboardplayer!!! The end of the gig was of course 'Fragile', a beautiful version.
When Sting playes at your town, just go and see him. He's great!!
