Just a few lines to tell everybody on the list the the sow of STING in Barcelona was a great show, same as the previous shows of this tour,he introduce Message In A Bottle that he put out on the other Spanish shows and that he doesen't figure on the set list. The sound quality was great and the set list was the same as a previus shows.
Sting arrived at the venue a 6.30 pm with manager and Jake. The other members of the band arrived a same time with two diffrent cards. He signed some records and inmediatly started the soundcheck that was very short..only Fir her Up was palyed. After the soundcheck all the members of the band goes out of the venue walking around the place and they meet with me and Xavi for a couple of signatures. I talk a few minutes with Jake about the Spanish TV show do in September, Funny!!!!!! Manus was out side of the stage doors with a small telephone and after call he signed a T-Shirt to a Holland fan who attend at the stage doors. I talk with Manu in French for a couple of time about the tour and he signed too my cd.
Other Spanish fans ar on the enter doors waiting for the opening doors like STINA who made the complet Spanish tour, Luis Ramiro Bronson, Miquel and other Outlandos club members.
We meet also Danny..the best man!!!!.we talk out of the venue during 10 minutes about the Tour, the start hour of the shows in Spain and the confirmed Central Park show this summer. For all the people who mentioned a possible reunion....well, bad news for POLICE-maniacs...Danny say..NO..never...I want to know who introduce this kind of rumors???.
On the other hand, the Barcelona newspapers have some good reports the same day of the show and today ,there was some ones with nice color pics. and good words about the show.
After the show I meet with STING with my children Ian,my wife and Xavi..the only one who was on the dressing room for a couple of minutes was my child Ian.Sting signed his T-Shirt and talk with him a little Spanglish!!!!.It was a very nice and exciting momet to see the face of my child when comes back with Sting's manager from the Sting room.
It's something incredible..i'm a POLICE/STING collector since 1979 and my children with one time, the first time..meet him without any problems. After this...STING meet with Xavi, my wife, Ian and me and signed some cd's and some pictures (the one from Montpellier with me on stage). Sting was very kind and he say to my wife (Mertxe) that we have a nice boy . He say hello another time to Ian and was the end of the large day.
Sting left Barcelona tomorrow morning and today deceided to make some tourist tour for Barcelona.
The show was promoted by compaq give to the VIP people some STING stuff like a cap,T-Shirt,bag and key chaing.Anybody on the list knows who was the people who get this pack????... ofcourse..IAN.
Well..people interested on the audio recording.please meet privately......
I still can't believe that 24 hours have passed since my first Sting concert. 24 hours ago I was in the Palau D'esportes in Barcelona jumping and dancing in the arena with hundreds of other fans.
I arrived at the Palau 1 hour and a half before they opened the doors, some of the fans were already there and sat on the steps. Among those a group stood out, they looked like what I would call veteran fans, the old army of Police supporters, having stuck with Sting's solo career in the last years. I suppose this is the group of Outlandos that Antoni refers in his email. Some of them had Police t-shirts (the ENVY!) that were probably only five years younger than me, and during the concert I assume it was them that produced this giant poster that had the Synchronicity stripes, among the words Barcelona / Synchronicity and some others I couldn't quite see.
The doors eventually opened and I was happy to grab a spot right in front of the stage, at about 1 meter of the first line of fans. A couple of hours later came this bizarre looking fellow into the stage, he introduced himself as JC, and his belt read something like JC|001. This guy was hilarious, he does all these sounds with his voice, like drums, beats and all varied sound fx, and introduced the supporting artist Nitin Sawhney. Nitin was a _very_ good surprise! I wasn't sure what to expect but he is really good! He had some very interesting original stuff, just a couple of songs were not above average, and a very solid band, that provided an excellent rythm section. I did't exactly understand if JC/001 is a member or not, but he came on stage a couple of songs, and together with other indian singer they did very interesting stuff. I don't know if he is sticking with Sting for the rest of the tour, but worth coming early to the concert to catch him!
Ok, finally the hour came... Light out, 1000 years beggining, band comes in, Sting grabs the guitar and off they go. As Antoni pointed out the sound was really excellent, they did the usual setlist and Message in a Bottle (I didn't even know they had it drop down for the last concerts).
Just some comments on the songs now: 1000 years is a great starter; having IYLSSTF at the beggining of the set is great for putting everybody dancing and jumping; I found Perfect Love much better live, and specially liked the different ending; All This Time and Mad About You are good to put everybody singing; Tomorrow We'll See was probably the song I enjoyed less, I think I'd stick to the album version, as opposite to Perfect Love, neverthless it was worth to see the duel between Sting and Botti, which Sting won by 2/3 seconds; When The World is.../Bring on the Night was great, bear in mind this is my first concert so I'm not particularly fed up with it, very good band energy; the Police quartet of songs (Magic / Roxanne / Every Breath / Message) did raise up the volume in the Palau, I specially liked ELTSDIM and Message (where everybody seemed determinated to outvoice Sting in the singing).
So I guess the isn't such a thing as a perfect setlist for everyone, but I have to put in my 2c: it's strange that Mercury Falling is the only album with no songs performed on the tour, I was expecting to hear ISHICSC, can't quite understand why it they took it from the setlist... I also think they could take Moon Over Bourbon and Tomorrow we'll see, and play You Still Touch Me and Ghost Story. On the overall I think it was a very balanced setlist, obviously people tended to calm down on BND songs (except DR and BND itself), and not many knew the lyrics.
The band was in great shape, they interacted among themselves and with the public in a very cool way. Sting was very energetic, he rocked and moved a lot on stage, he spoke some words and sang some parts of WBT and Fragile in spanish... Some funny moments when Sting and Domininc were making silly faces while Jason Robello or Chris Botti were doing their solos. Also some funny acting between Sting and Robello, as Sting would sometimes go over the keyboardist and make threatning faces at him.
All of the band members seemed to be having a good time, even Kipper who was still on crutches, Botti and Robello had very good interaction with the public, specially Botti, an excellent player, who would come near us for his solos.
I thought that throwing small animal toys (I don't know how they are called in english, those fluffy ones, like forever friends) at stage was an habit that belonged in boys band concerts. I was evidently wrong has Sting received a couple of new small friends last night, thrown at his feet to the stage, he seemed surprised at the first one, but afterwards he would just murmur a "thank you" and smile.
The only negative aspect of the concert, at least for me, was that sometimes it was really hot and some of the songs would be better heard and enjoyed if I wasn't crammed with dozens of sweaty fans (with some frequent smokers, tobacco and others, here and there) trying to get my hands in the hair without poking someone in the eye or elbowing another concert-goer. Of course if i was to go to the same concert I would have gone to the standing area again, and it's also right that moments like Message in the Bottle or ELTSDIM were special also for being down there.
So I shouldn't really be complaining since Saturday I'm going to be standing again among sweaty people, I should be no exception, in the National Stadium, over here in Portugal, but if the night is good it should be a great atmosphere.
Oh, just a last thing... When I was waiting for a taxi comes this dark blue class E Mercedes, and guess who was sitting in the back with the window open? yes, him... the car was doing a tight turn so it reduced speed for awhile, some girls behind me screamed his name, and we all waved at him, he responded with a quick wave and a smile...
At 7:20 in the morning I was getting on the plane to Lisbon, and at 10 o'clock I was presenting a project at university, which went very well btw.
It was a really amazing experience! great CONCERT! VIVA Sting ! VIVA Barcelona!
P.S. A special salut to Antoni, who was very helpful in providing some directions in Barcelona, muchas gracias!
