Estadio Nacional - Lisbon, Portugal

by Andre' Lapa on June 4, 2000

Another concert review in a week, that's been a lot of posting for a lurker (me), but I just have to share it with you...

Sting, 03 June at Estadio Nacional (National Stadium) in Lisbon

WHAT A GREAT CONCERT!

My second Sting concert, ever, and if Barcelona was very good, this one was excellent! It was held at the National Soccer stadium, I had ground(?) tickets and managed a pretty good spot in the front row, slightly left of the stage, so I was between Sting and Dominic.

The concert began around 22.30 (Nitin was on at 21.30) and lasted aprox. 2 hours. It was a very enjoyable night, perhaps just a little windy, but you can't really feel it down there! I guess the stadium wasn't sold out, but there were lots of people, the central seats were almost full, there were just some seats at the sides. The crowd was very pleasant, at least where I stood, lot's of young people...

Oh, and they put two giant video screens each side of the stage, which I couldn't see very well (not that I needed), but where always transmiting very good images of the band, I think they had about 5/6 cameras, but I'm not really sure.

Again, Nitin Sawhney was very cool, and the crowd responded really well...

One of the singers even spoke in brazilian, and everybody laughed alot with JC/001...

During Sting's performance you could see some of Nitin's band members walking around that pit that separes the stage from the crowd, taking pictures, shaking hands, and enjoying Sting's music. Also, the percussionist was on stage with Sting for 1000 years and Desert Rose.

Now about Sting!

He seemed in good mood, dressed with his side pocket trousers and black t-shirt, he also had this thin sleevless jacket (I'm really in a loss for words here), with a hood that he pulled over his head during Moon Over Bourbon Street. He spoke some words in portuguese, and, of course, introduced the band members as "senhor..." He moved alot on stage, and did the usual acting with the other band members.

All of the band members seemed very well, especially Kipper (always clapping, standing up, even with recovering leg); Dominic made some strange faces now and then, once he even seemed he was going to cry, well I guess those are guitarist facial ticks, or whatever, maybe he really was unhappy.

About the set, here it goes (no really change from Barcelona, I hope I don't switch the order of songs)

  1. 1000 years - great start, as I said the guy from Nitin Sawhney was onstage which complemented Manu very well, the song conserves all of its qualities live, really enjoyable
  2. Set them free - The band really starts rocking on this one, and so does everybody on the audience, it's really good to put everybody jumping and dancing and singing
  3. After the rain has fallen - it's allright, good chorus, and everybody seems to like it a lot to, it's specially a great way of going to:
  4. We"ll be together - I really like this song live! Great energy from Sting (I find it hard to believe he hates the song), he ends up (like in barcelona) with the "si estamos juntos" line, from Nada como el Sol...
  5. Perfect love - as I said before, I'm really enjoying see this song performed live, I didn't care much for it in the album, but it's really nice live! Manu did the french rap, and the altered ending is very cool...
  6. All this time - This song puts everyone jumping again, still very powerfull
  7. Mad About you - the same goes for this one
  8. Seven days - Very well done, watch out for Manu's drumming, and not the most easy song to clap your hands too...
  9. Fill her up - nice, altough I expected a bit more of the ending... it seemed some energy was missing
  10. Fields of gold - first song of the night were the crowd goes really wild! very well done, bravo!
  11. Moon over bourbon street - Sting's raspy voice and Botti's inspiration gave this song the edge to make it really good... it was around this song that Chris Botti started getting big applause...
  12. Every little thing she does is Magic - Jumping and dancing starts again! Also the traditional e-yos! Excellent arrangement for a song that's so old, it's really a classic, very good!
  13. Englishman in New York - Really good, specially Manu's part with the drums!
  14. Brand New Day - it's a cool song, and everyone responded very well to it, but it when I hear it live I just keep waiting for a "kick" that never really comes in... it's hard to explain, it loses a bit of its strenght...
  15. Tommorow we'll see - I really think I prefer the album version, but neverthless it is a great song! Botti was going to win tonight, but he stopped right after Sting did, afraid of losing his job perhaps!
  16. Roxanne - Great to hear that slow intro, and to watch when everybody realizes the song is Roxanne and everybody goes crazy... Real strong sing-along part with the usual Roxanne-oooo.... It's nice to see that all of the Police era songs have new arrangements that fit the band very well, and also seem to please the audience a lot. Oh, Sting ended this song with a Você - Você - Você - Você (you - you - you - you)
  17. Desert Rose - Cheb Mami was there with him! What a great suprise! Excellent tonight! Many of my non-Sting fans friends loved the song, and were impressed with C. Mami. Sting also did some dancing with him, very funny!
  18. Bring on the night and when the world is running down... - I understand people complaining about this song, but I must say, again, that since I'm fairly new in Sting's concerts I really like to see it performed live! Great energetic songs, they stick a nice bit of salsa in the middle of it, which has Sting shaking his ass... also great to watch out for the solos...

Encore 1

  1. If I ever Lose my Faith - Excellent song, excellent arrangement! Sting really asking for everyone's voice in the chorus...
  2. Every Breath you Take - Of course the crowd really goes nuts on this one, great energy, both from the band and the audience...

Encore 2

  1. Message in a bottle - Just Sting in the guitar, altough Kipper sat at the keyboard he didn't seem to do much... of course it was excellent! i really don't think i nee to describe it...
  2. Fragile - The perfect ending... altough... (and here I go again) Lithium Sunset could also be a great way of finishing a concert... and so I must ramble again: where are MF songs? Hounds of winter? I'm so happy? Brought to my senses? No? ok, i can't have it all, I guess...

So, it was excellent! I really enjoyed it! Everything was perfect! My father (he went to the central seats) was really impressed with Chris Botti and Dominic Miller, which also had some really inspired moments tonight... You could have a lesson on guitar techniques and styles of playing, by watching him play, he also changes a lot of guitar during the set! Sting was also very inspired on the bass, great solos now and then!

Ok this is it... This concert and Popmart Lisbon are closely tied as the best concerts of my life (which is not very long, I must say).

Tomorrow Sting is going to HermanSIC, which is a kind of Tonight with J. Leno around here, only longer and weekly... He is probably going to perform a song or two and to a small interview... I have put any idea of going aside since I have a Maths test on Monday, but of course I'll catch it by television...

Just on curiosity, Sting has been all over the press this week, every weekly magazine as at least 1/2 pages talking about his career and coming to Portugal... He is also cover of CITY magazine, which have very nice article/interview with him, talking about drugs, music, family, tantric sex, the police, money, etc. The article is from an Andrew Duncan, exclusive to City in Portugal, so I don't know if it appeared in some other foreign magazine... Another magazine also published the Revolver Interview, translated to portuguese obviously...

Oh, Just another thing... When Sting came on stage and looked around the crowd he pointed somewhere and made a recognizing face... I can almost swear he was pointing at me! Well, he could have remembered me from Barcelona: I was very near the stage, and he also waved at me when he passed with the Mercedes in the street! What do you mean, no? Yes, he could have been pointing to the side, or to some pretty girls around me... but let me have my 1 seconds of fame! (also my sister and my friends can serve as my witnesses, they pointed it out, I didn't even say a word! really... ok, ok, I'm going now...)

For those seeing Sting in concert in the near future enjoy your shows! It's going to be awhile for me!
