Finsbury Park - London, England [The Fleadh Festival]

I was at the Fleadh, the all day Celtic music festival in Finsbury Park, London for the Sting show. I haven't posted a review yet because I have only been back home for the past day, and the mailing list archives are not up to date, so I did not wish to repeat anything that someone else may have posted. But I'm willing to take that risk now.

(BTW: there was a very brief review of the Fleadh in general in The Times on Monday [p. 18], as well as an article about The Grotesque).

One thing I liked about the show is that there were no assigned seats. It was standing only. And somehow I wound up in the second row, just right of center stage! I would have been willing to pay 4 times the ticket price for a place that close!

Sting took the stage at 9:45PM after Jools Holland. Sting and the band were in top form. The East London Gospel Choir, which is featured on the songs Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot and I Was Brought to My Senses (from MF), performed with Sting and the band. Aside from band regulars Vinnie Colaiuta, Dominic Miller, and Kenny Kirkland, a trombone and a sax player (whose names I cannot remember) also joined the band.

The setlist was as follows:

  1. The Hounds Of Winter
  2. I Hung My Head
  3. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
  4. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
  5. I Was Brought To My Senses
  6. Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot
  7. Fields Of Gold
  8. Synchronicity II
  9. Roxanne
  10. Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down...
  11. Englishman In New York (which he introduced as Englishman in Finsbury Park)
  12. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  13. Every Breath You Take
  14. Lithium Sunset (extended)
  15. Fraglie

Sting seemed to be in a very good mood that night, and even attempted a few funky dance moves with the trombone and sax players that resembled running in place.

I was pleased that the lights show was not over-done. When I last saw Sting on the TST tour, I remember that a lot more effort had been put into the lights display. I liked the minimal lights display.

Overall I thought the show was wonderful. I was surprised, however, that he did not play You Still Touch Me, given that it is the current single.
