Legends Field - Tampa, Florida, United States

by Eric Burroughs on June ?, 1996

It was a nice setting for the show, outside, very humid but certainly manageable. Nathalie Merchant was an excellent opening act. Sting has had some great opening acts, artists who could tour on their own quite successfully. Her set was mostly material from her latest album, Tigerlily, and it was very well-done. Her voice was in fine form, and her band complemented each other nicely. It was basic elements, with the organ/piano, electric guitar, occasional sax and trombone, and percussion. She definitely got the crowd prepared for the main act, and if anyone doesn't own her album, they should get it.

Now, the main act. Looking over the set list, it was the same as the Austria show on June 15 except he inserted "I'm So Happy.." for "All Four Seasons." The crowd was fairly sublime throughout the show except for the moments when he starts playing those oldies of his (Roxanne, etc.) Maybe its just me, but I am so damn sick of people bitching about me standing up during the entire show. For this show, I was psyched because my tickets were 20 rows back from the stage, dead center, and all the damn middle-aged people around me who go to the show to relive their old college days when they used to listen to the Police but haven't bought a Sting album in years, are totally befudled by the new tunes, and are too grumpy and want to sit down for most, if not the entire, show. Of course they bitch and bitch, but I'm going to enjoy myself, especially with those seats. Somebody needs to tell them its a ROCK concert and not a funeral.

Anyway, the performance was great. His voice wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it was still in descent form. I was pleasantly surprised by his performance of "Seven Days," definitely one of my favorite tunes from Ten Summoner's Tales. The sax for that song was a nice addition. The horns, sax and trombone, were a great supplement to the show. Kenny Kirkland added his own touch to the extended version of "Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down," much jazzier than the solo of David Sancious on the last tour. I liked the show outside, though the humidity was pretty bad, even for a typical Florida summer night. I'm glad he played both "Every Little Thing" and "Synchronicity II" again, althought I liked them better back to back on the last tour, which was a nice adrenaline rush.

The new album is little more subdued, and so the overall show was also, but it was a lot of fun. I have to admit I wasn't particularly excited about the show beforehand, but it didn't take long for me to really get into it. It was certainly a show to remember.
