PNC Bank / Garden State Arts Center - Holmdel, New Jersey, United States

by Joe on June 28, 2000

Hey all! Just got back from the concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ. What a show! Not too many variations from other concerts... Actually same playlist as the concerts at NJPAC and The Beacon from last year. Still an excellent performance from the Stingster!

While my wife and I were waiting for the opening act to finish we saw Chris Botti walk by. He went over to the audio control area and was just standing there drinking a beer. Now this is something that I have observed during the last few performances.... NO ONE WANTS TO TALK TO ANY OF BAND MEMBERS. THEY ONLY WANT TO TALK TO STING!!!!!

So Chris and I started talking for a while. Asked him what he thought about Sting. How he liked touring. He actually said that Sting is a great guy to be around. Just a bag of laughs. Chris is a really nice guy. If you see him at a show, go up and say hi to him. So as I was talkin to Chris, he says" go say hi to Kipper...he is right behind you." And there was Kipper standing among the people. Not one person saying a word to him....Felt bad for them....anyway.....

Concert was great... Audio could have been better.

But the biggest new of all.... after the first few songs, Sting anounced that they will filming the performance of Desert Rose tonight for an IMAX Movie!!!! This got the crowd going! That is going to be one great IMAX film!

Anyway...rest of show was great... Oh. I know I said I will be sending pictures around to the list of the today show video that I shot last week in NYC. Didn't get to it yet. Will get to it this week so check the e-mail often!

Gotta run!

Wow is all I can say! Having been my first time at a Sting concert I was totally blown away...the weather could have been prettier but the constant light drizzle cooled things off and I was in such a good mood I even bought a $30 T Shirt -- what was I thinking?

Anyway, if anyone out there had the good fortune to tape the show, I'd love to get a copy it being a sentimental performance to me (like I said, my first!) so please email me if you can help.

Thanks and hope you guys enjoyed the show as much as I did.

Last night was the Homdel, NJ show for Sting and a friend of mine, Michele, and I got to meet Chris Botti and Kipper!!!!!!!!! They were just walking around outside in the seating area. I spotted Chris first and then we walked down by the stage door. I turned around and Kipper was walking down the seating stairway towards us. We said hello, introduced ourselves and he talked to us for what seemed like 10 mins. or so! Kip is so nice and he gave us his autograph - we were loving it to hear his Australian accent and he is really cute!!! I was telling him about StingStuff and how a bunch of us out there post messages like this to everyone - and how we've all met some great people through it - Kip thought that was great and was really interested in it!!! So I then I mentioned how I saw Chris floating around outside and that I was bummed that he went in since I wanted to talk to him. If anyone has gotten Chris Botti's newest CD, it's awesome!!!!!! Anyway, Kip went inside and the next thing I know...Chris sticks his head out! He looks my way and starts out the door...so I walked towards him and he's smiling!!!!!! We introduced ourselves and I told him how much I love his new CD and all....he's an amazing trumpet player and you can really get lost in his music and playing. We talked to him for about 10 mins also and he was so sweet! And he is VERY CUTE in person. We also got his autograph....If anyone hasn't checked it out yet - I got a great picture of Chris at the Today Show that is posted on Judy's website!!! So that was the start of a great night for me!!!!

Sting came out and although it was the same set list as the Camden show, which I expected, it was great to hear it all over again since it was an awesome show!!!!!!!! Sting's newer version of Roxanne and Bring on the Night/Driven to Tears was amazing!!!!! Chris' trumpet playing was mesmerizing....and Dominic's guitar work blew me away again!!!

And this has inspired me to go and take more lessons on my guitar!

They filmed Desert Rose last night, the encore version with Cheb for the Sony Imax film, All Access that will be shown at the Imax theatre in NY City sometime in the future. Sting ended the night with Fragile....I can never get enough of that song. He also did Fields of Gold (which I've heard this group complain about that he plays that song too much...I love that song...he can play it a million times over if he wants!!)...If I Ever Lose My Faith, If You Love Someone, Every Little Thing She Does, Every Breath You Take, Brand New Day, Perfect Love Gone Wrong, Moon Over Bourbon Street - and Chris played awesome trumpet during this!!!!! - and a lot more. I can pretty much remember every song he did. He did some Police songs, like I had said.

I'm looking forward to another show in LA in August and for those of you who are getting ready to see him....be prepared to be blown away by sheer talent from all!!!!!!

Enjoy the day everyone!

What can I say! A truly fabulous show. We have been to many Police and Sting shows over the years but last night was great because we took 2 friends with us who had never seen him before. they were blown away! Oh, by the way we were at first bummed out because our seats were in the second to lasr row, but we stopped at the box office and we were able to up grade to the 14th row!!!

I was scared to death it wasn't going to happen. After several days of hot humid weather, threatening clouds blanketed New Jersey around lunch on the day I was, for the first time ever, going to be able to catch Sting on tour! Naturally, we had lawn seats so I feared I would be sitting in a mud puddle for two hours struggling to enjoy my favorite artist. I couldn't have been more wrong and what a show it was!

We walked in the PNC Bank Center in Holmdel, NJ just as opening act Shawn Colvin was starting her set. Naturally, she sang her own rendition of "Every LIttle Thing...," causing Sting to remark later "My turn, Shawn" just before the band swung into the first opening notes of their rebuttle.

The set list was pretty predictable, although I was pleasantly surprised that Sting was filming "Desert Rose" that evening for the Imax movie "All Access". This required him to sing it twice. "I told them you wouldn't mind," he said. Sting repeated a conversation he had the first time he ever met blues great Miles Davis. "He said, 'Sting, you got the biggest head in the world,'" he recalled. "I said, 'What do you mean, Miles?' He said 'I went to see you in that movie, your head took up the whole f*ckin screen!' So I don't think old Miles would have thought much of Imax." We'll see if Miles was right when the film comes out.

One thing that I really enjoyed about Sting live — and I think anyone who has seen him perform would back me up on this I while his voice is stellar and sounds at times identical to what we so often hear flowing out of our stereo speakers, the band really changes the way the songs sound and adds so much depth to them. Dominic's guitar playing is always top notch, but I was most impressed by the way Chris' trumpet playing contributed to the feel of songs like "Bourbon Street," "Seven Days" (a stark contrast to the classical guitar on TST) and especially "Bie Lie (Small World)" And whenever I see him perform "Roxanne" on some TV special these days he always wants to slow it down but Tuesday night's performance featured a livlier, more reggae version that was the closest thing to the Police original I've heard in a long time.

I could go on and on because every little song he sang was magic but I'm sure Jon wouldn't want me to hog all his webspace. My wife and I were thrilled to have been able to be a part of it and if you were lucky enough to be there you know what I'm talking about! And if you taped the show or find a bootleg, give me an email please!
