Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga Springs, New York, United States

by Don on July 3, 2000

Just got back from the show in Saratoga and it was awesome! The best thing about it was Sting's attitude. He seemed in good spirits and energized, repeatedly walking the stage and jamming with his bass. His voice was phenomenal. He hit all the high notes without a problem.

In a personal touch Sting mentioned that he was glad it wasn't storming out.The past two times he played there, it stormed like crazy.Since this was in 88 and 96, I thought it was a nice touch that he remembered.

The setlist stayed to the standard. He did have a suprise guest though! James Taylor came out and sung his part on "Fill Her Up".James is playing Saratoga tomm night I think, so he made a quick appearance and disappeared back off stage.

The new, semi-acoustic "Roxanne" caught everyone by surprise and with "Desert Rose" following kept them on their feet.People tried to sit down during "Bring on the Night/World Is Running Down", but the energetic jam in the middle got them right back up.

Sting did start "Faith" a little differently. He played the first chorus very quietly and then kicked into tempo when he hit the chorus."Every Breath" was a big fave of the evening.

Only disappointments...no "Message" or "Mad About You".Overall a great show.Sting did a lot more dancing than I remember from Mercury Falling tour. And Dominic actually smiled! He was wearing his funky pants again.

Well I think he's on to Jones Beach for the 3rd so get ready!

I was at the Saratoga show Sunday night and I have to say that it was the best concert that I have ever attended including Stings last performance at SPAC. Unfortunately I have forgotten the order of the song list. If any of you Sting fans who attended know the order please reply.

Just came back from the saratoga show . the albany times union review was dead on - it was a fantastic night of music! sting seemed very relaxed and playful and the band was going wild . i've been a fan for years , but this was my first time seeing him live . he played for about 1 1/2 hours , and from what i read here , stuck to his brand new day set excepting for james taylor coming out for a nano second wearing a gilligan hat in order to help on "fill 'er up" . the audience went nuts . it was a nice surprise .

Sting was really enjoying himself, as was the band , and even mentioned the other times he played spac . if you've never been there , it's a small , outdoor venue ( 5,000 seats and every one a good one ) and it's in the middle of a woodsy state park . it's a beautiful place to see any concert , and artists love being there . he remebered playing there during a bad storm and laughed at having to fly out in it ( i wish i'd seen that show ... his lighting was gorgeous and a storm as a backdrop would have been beyond perfect and completely sting-esque ).

My favorite performances were "desert rose" "roxanne" and "a thousand years". i was surprised at how cool all the yodelling sounded live on "rose" and playing "a thousand years" as his first number set a great mood .

Anyway , it was one of the very best concerts i've experienced , and my husband , who had NEVER been to a live show , of any performer ever , said he was hoping it wouldn't end . he's hooked and is vowing to keep going back to see sting whenever it's possible .

BTW , most people weren't really getting into shawn colvin , who opened , and her loudest and most responsive applause came when she covered "every little thing she does is magic" . i heard people asking the volunteer ushers "do you know who that woman is ?" and the volunteers admitting they had no clue . some of these ushers were very young too .

It was just shawn and her guitar , alone , and at one point after she spent five minutes talking about an 'important' song of hers - "wichita skyline" - and comparing her efforts to jimmy webb , she became really frustrated with the crowd and blurted out , " you do think this is important , don't you ? i do . you are listening , right ? yeah...i know . " she might have been trying to be funny , but people in my section booed her . she sounded as if she couldn't believe she wasn't the headliner . and , to make matters worse , when she finally did get an enthusiastic response to her cover of "magic" , she said , "oh yes , the man you came to see ."

Shawn might be a good musician and songwriter , but she was sting's only misstep . i think she was intended to compliment sting's energy as she's kinda reserved and sort of unassuming and it allows sting to burst on stage and just carry the audience away , but her attitude was nasty and even disrespectful at times .

No shawn , we didn't pay those prices to see you ; we understand your frustration , but for all we cared , you could've been tony tennille or edie gorme or even peter lemonjello . bring on sting !!!!

When she was at the CT show, she was ok, but a lot of people didn't know who she was either, which was surprising to me. She was cordial to the audience and told us we were much better than the nite's before audience, several times. I really don't think she was the right warm-up for Sting. She was too mellow, too different. The best warm-up I've seen with Sting was Paula Cole. She seemed to have just enough energy to keep the audience interested, but not too much to overpower the anticipation of Sting. Hey, let's face it, anyone who is playing warm-up for the man is going to have a hard time!!
