Just saw Shawn open for Sting here in Montreal tonight. I thought her singing and songwriting were fantastic, but she was sorely lacking in stage presence. I cheered and yelled for her anyway, but the response was poor except when she sang "Sunny Came Home". She tried to talk to the audience too much, but didn't have a lot too say. There were a lot of silences between the songs, a lot of guitar tuning before every song. It just seemed awkward. Too bad.
Sting was excellent. He always performs a song differently every time. I especially enjoyed this tour's version of Moon Over Bourbon Street!! And it's not usually one of my favourite songs, but I thought it was the best performed song tonight! I was disappointed that he didn't do Ghost Story, as I thought he would, but there's always something I'd like him to play that he didn't. But I'm a happy camper!
Montreal Setlist:
Encore
Short Encore
Well, this was my first Sting show... ever! I missed him four years ago, and I promised I wouldn't this time, and man, was it worth it!!!! I guess I'm too tired to say much, but here's the jest of it: He started the show slowly, building up more in IYLSSTF. I must say I was impressed with PLGW, and Fill her up, and he really got the crowd going with ELTSDIM, and everything after that. I was ecstatic with the version of Moon Over Bourbon Street, with his deep throat, and the way he played Roxanne was fabulous, starting out acoustically and building it up! My favorite part was the second half of the concert for sure since it took that long to warm up the crowd!!! But, Brand New Day sounded like his band wasn't on the same rhythm as Sting. Every other song kicked ass though!
The best, though, I feel he left for the end. He came on to do the encore, played IIELMFIY beautifully, and did an amazing performance of Every Breath You Take, and then he did another encore!!! He came back on, played Message In A Bottle to the crowd, by himself. Everyone sang it with him, and it was so awesome, considering it's been a while since he played it!! He ended the night by playing Fragile with the band, and spent like five minutes saying thanks to the crowd.
I also bought his tour booklet, $20 Canadian!!! Expensive (the shirts were $40-60), but I needed a memento, so it was worth it. Phew, tired now, I bet I'm missing out a lot of good parts in my review, but I'm exhausted. Can anyone add to my review? Thanks,
I was there at the molson centre list night also, and this was the 4th time I have seen sting live.I really liked the show he was in a good mood which for sting seems to make all the difference.when i saw him for soul cages he seemed angry for most of the show and it ended early.I was very impressed with moon over bourbon street and also liked message in a bottle one of my favorite police songs.I also bought a shirt and program, they were expensive but these days i don't see to many shows so why not. Over all a good show and nice to see him again,i missed mercury falling.
That show was excellent from the beginnig to the end.At last, i could see manu katché play with him live! The way he played "message in a bottle" reminded me that live aid performance back in 1985...the first time i saw sting on tv...a very special moment for me!
