Jones beach Sunday night concert was exactly like the description of the previous night there, except it was really really foggy. Definately the foggiest (and the only foggy) concert I have ever been to. It got REALLY foggy during Roxanne and it was cool cos the fog was all red. The audience was surprisingly and disappointingly mellow. Are we getting old? I couldn't sit still, I thought I would burst. Sting and the band were great as usual, he was in really good voice and he wore the same outfit as the night before. (I hope he washed it in between).
Now for my question.
Has anyone noticed Mr Sumner talking funny? I noticed it last night, I can't even describe the way he was saying "gold" in fields of, but everything he said with an S came out like an SH instead of an S. ?????? What's the deal. PLEASE someone tell me he does NOT have dentures at his age! But I know Sean Connery has them, and Sting sounds just like he does. eeks. Just the thought alone! Sting with DENTURES!!!!! Please someone say it's just not so!
The show started on a warm and foggy evening at 8:00 PM with Sting singing The Hounds of Winter. Dressed in military style pants, a long dark vest, and military boots, Sting and the band initially concentrated on songs from Mercury Falling.
Before the concert, we were wondering how Sting would perform Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot. We thought maybe a New York City gospel choir might participate but that was not the case. Sting performed a semi acapella (if there is such a thing) version that was truly something to remember. He followed with I'm So Happy, I Hung My Head, You Still Touch Me, and I Was Brought To My Senses and then swithched over to some tunes from Ten Summoner's Tales.
Before singing I'm So Happy, Sting was especially cordial with the crowd. He introduced the song as being about divorce and asked the audience who was divorced. A guy in the front row made enough of a ruckus in the front row to prompt Sting's attention. Sting made some small talk with the guy and asked him for the name of the girl sitting next him. The fan replied "Roxanne" to which Sting invited him on stage to sing "Roxanne" solo. They guy got up on stage and in good humor did an impression of Eddie Murphy in the movie Beverly Hills Cop singing Roxanne. Sting, the band members, and the audience had a pretty good laugh over it.
From the Tales, Sting and his band did nice renditions of Seven Days, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, and Fields of Gold. Following these songs, Sting brought the crowd back to the Police era and his early Solo years. The band performed We'll Be Together, Roxanne, When the World Is Running Down, Bring On The Night, Demolition Man, and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. Dominic Miller, dressed in his Reggie Miller USA Olympic Basketball Team Jersey, did his usual outstanding guitar solo on When the World Is Running Down right after Kenny Kirkland put on an unbelievable keyboard exhibition. Kirkland really seemed to be enjoying himself, smiling through the whole show.
The sold out show closed with encore performances of Fragile and Lithium Sunset.
Other key items from the show: There were two band members I was not familiar with that played various horns. They fit in very well with the regulars and really added a jazzy touch to the show. One of them performed a rap about Sting during one of the songs that was great. They both danced and stepped in tandem and really encouraged the audience to get into the concert. Sorry I don't remember their names because they definitely deserve the credit. Vinnie Colaiuta did his usual excellent job on drums. Sting and Miller trade instruments for one song which added an interesting touch to the show.
Overall, I have to rate this concert as one of the best I've ever seen. Sting is getting closer to his audience and he looks like he is enjoying himself more than he ever has. The band is running like a well oiled machine. I just wish they would be back in New York soon.
