Great Woods Center - Mansfield, Massachusetts, United States

by Tony Cintolo on July 13, 1996

I saw Sting Friday July 12th at Great Woods. The show was phenominal, everything and more than I had hoped for. At one point he told a story of a fan who who held up a sign at his Philidelphia show that read "Can I please sing I'm so Happy I can't Stop Crying with you", and he let him do it. Sting then asked if anyone here would like to do the same. I immediately jumped out of my front row seat and yelled "THAT'S ME!" He motioned for me to come on stage. As I was walking tward the stage he asked if I was sure that I knew the song, although I could not get any words out I gave him an "are you kidding" look. I climbed up on the stage, dropped to my knees and started to do the "I'm not worthy" wave in my best Wayne's World fashion. He did not really appreciate that saying, "That's enough of that" He asked me my name and I said "Oh my god......Tony Cintolo" then instructed me on how the song would work: "I'll do the verses and when we get to the chorus, you hit on this mike." The song began and when my moment came I slid next to him and started singing the chorus in unison with him. The next one came and he let me sing it all alone. Each of the choruses we sang together I toyed with the idea of doing a harmony, when it came to the last chorus I said to myself "F@#& IT I'm doin' it" and broke into a harmony vocal with him, as I was doing it he gave a look as if to say "not bad". The song ended to thunderous applause, we shook hands and I jumped off the stage. It was a religous experence!

I always assumed that any show of that calibur would have a great monitor system so that you could hear youself sing. I could barely hear myself while I was singing, that makes him even more incredible in my eyes.

I just got back from seeing Sting at Great Woods--WOW!!!!

What can I say? He is soooo hot! Set list was the same as was posted, the only lull in the set was during Mad About You . Sting seemed to be having a great time up there. He is still cracking his 4th of July jokes about how in England they celebrate King George the 3rd day (instead of july 4th) by sitting around the house and grumbling . This was after Hung my Head.

People stayed in their seats until If You Love Somebody Set Them Free-that song always gets a crowd up and dancing. Before I'm so Happy... Sting mentioned that someone at his Philadelphia show held up a sign asking if he could sing with him, and he did. Well, Sting went on to say that it was so much fun he was wondering if anyone in the audience knew the words to the song and would like to sing along with him! Of course everyone jumped up waving their arms, and he chose one lucky guy from the front row. He checked him out to be sure he knew the song, introduced him to the audience, and told him he could only sing along on the chorus. Well, this guy was enjoying his 15 minutes of fame and was mugging for the rest of the band as well as the audience-and everyone was really into it- it was really fun! Then, after that song was over Sting pulls out a piece of paper and starts talking about how he always gets people sending him notes backstage and that he got this one note that he really wanted to read to us, so he starts reading this note about how this guy had an important question he wanted to ask someone tonight, then he reads the signature on the note and asks if the guy is still in the audience. The spotlights go around the pavillion, and Sting is looking for this guy who wrote the note. The guy finally gets from his seat to the stage, and after shaking hands with Sting he takes the microphone, and says (as if he's just won an academy award) "first of all I'd like to thank Sting for giving me some of his valuable time", then he talked about how much he loved his girlfriend and proposed to her! He took out a ring but for some reason she never made it to the stage. So he thanks Sting and shakes his hand (and here I am thinking if it were me up there I'd probably totally lose it and ask Sting to marry me!) Anyway, the crowd loved it and were on their feet again for the rest of the show (through Fog and all the Police tunes). He did a neat thing with Roxanne where he'd sing a line then the trombone would mimic it. I think the whole horn section added a lot , the arrangements were great, they really drew the audience in. At the end of the show, Sting went over to the far end of the stage and everyone was crowded up next to the stage holding their arms up to Sting. He reached out and shook hands with everyone, then did a slow run down the stage, touching hands as he ran, and when he reached the other end of the stage, he shook all of their hands too. The rest of the band did the same. Sting looked great- he wore black baggy army pants and a loose olive green button down tank top, to show off his great arms. This is the first time I've seen him that he didn't remove his shirt! He hit a few off key notes in the intro to Brought to my Senses, but his voice got better and stronger as the concert went on. He seemed to rush through the 1st encore, then did a nice job on Fragile. What a night, It was really a great concert, I only wish I was still there listening to Sting instead of sitting here writing this! I'm going again tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see if he pulls anyone else up on stage. bye for now.

I was at July 12 show 3rd row center. I got my tickets by calling and getting thru right away. Just lucky. I had 2 other people calling/standing in line and they got tickets in back sections. The people around me seemed more the type who would shell out $200 for a ticket. After the Cowboy Junkies (whom I could have done without) went off they added folding seats to the short 1st row! What kind of tickets are those?!

Anyway, Sting, who was less than 20 feet away, is an ANGEL. I don't know what vitamins he's taking but they work. He is tanned, his hair is blonde again, and he looks about 35. He was clean shaven except for his chin! Looks like he's growing a goatee. Gee, now I can tease my son that he has a goatee in order to look like Sting. And those arms!!! One did get smeared with bug - one of fun things about playing outdoors.

Loved the ska type trombone playing on Roxane! I really appreciated it since I go to ska shows. Direct TV was there filming and holding a contest. Does this mean they will be showing Sting tour?

There are about 4 or 5 XL T shirts of the tour, all $25. The tour book is $15, small (20 p.) but with lovely pix. Hats are small made of soft black with red rose and Sting on them.

Review of the Great Woods shows, 12th and 13th;Both shows were good, highlights including:

A random audience member assisting on the chorus of 'I'm so Happy I can't Stop Crying' a marriage proposal by an audience member to his girlfriend (also in the audience) right before preforming 'Fields of Gold'

The sound mix was better on Saturday the 13th, Friday seemed to leave the keyboards a bit in the background.

2 encores each night, including 'Every Breath you Take'.

For the Police fans, in addition to Every Breath he played Roxanne, Demolition Man (the techno remix created for the Stalone movie), and Every Little Thing She does is Magic.

The addition of the sax and trombone players turned a good show into great music; the only downer I can name is the lack of energy by Sting himself, guess I've been watching too many old police concert videos...

All in all, more than worth while, even when we had to sit through hurricane bertha on his Saturday night show.
