Molson Center - Montreal, Quebec, Canada

by Brian White on July 18, 1996

I saw the show in Montreal last night, and I'm quite suprised at how strong his voice was. I've been a fan for a long time, and have heard some rather lackluster singing from him: Le Spectrum, Syncronicity show on First Choice is a good example. I know that he has bouts of laryngitis, as is obvious in "Police Around the World." I expected that raspy, half voice. Hearing him last night makes me wonder why "Three Penny" was such a disaster.

Sarah was amazing. Is she doing shows other than the Canadian ones? I wish that Sting had at least mentioned her at the end. Furthermore, I wish he'd played Message in a Bottle, as this was my first time seeing him live.

Here's my short review of the Montreal show.

First of all, the opening has been done by Sarah McLachlan. I don't know much about her except her name, so I can't name the songs she made, but the people there seemed to appreciate a lot. She gave an encore! For a first part, I've rarely seen this...!

Then "he" came doing almost the same show than in the US (at least those whom I've read postings in the digest...) except that they didn't play Mad about you! Wonder why???

  1. The Hounds Of Winter
  2. I Hung My Head (Sting speaks for the first time. Some words in french that is always appreciated in Montreal)
  3. I Was Brought To My Senses
  4. Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot
  5. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free (the crowd stood up to dance at this point!)
  6. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (the crowd is going crazy...)
  7. Seven Days (part of the crowd sat down)
  8. You Still Touch Me (nobody sang the "Ooo Ooo" onstage. Probably sampled...)
  9. I'm So Happy I Can't So Crying (Euphoria! Instead of talking about divorce, Sting asked if someone could sing with him. Then, he invited with his hand someone of the first row to get up onstage. The guy, Yannick Delanne (that's what I heard...) became famous for about five minutes. Sting sang the verses, and Yannick the choruses in duet with Sting. Even alone sometimes. People in the crowd really enjoyed. A nice moment...!)
  10. Fields Of Gold
  11. Synchronicity II
  12. Roxanne (As expected, everybody stood up until the end of the show)
  13. Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down... (Kenny's piano solo was another great moment of the night!!!)
  14. Demolition Man
  15. Englishman In New York (the sax player's rap brings a very interesting dimension to the live version of that song)
  16. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  17. Every Breath You Take
  18. Lithium Sunset (sounded less "countrystyle" then the studio version)
  19. Fraglie (Sting played guitar)

As I read on the previous shows, Sting was wearing those baggy army pants and a grey sweater vest. The slide show behind the band during the songs was very nice. A great night! Let's read about other people!
