Well my week began with a long heavily medicated flight from London to Houston, Texas, I am a lousy flyer and in order to cope with the 10 hour flight I always seem to manage to procure myself some Valium or the like to help the little Jeremy sleep. Basically I take off about 40 min before the airplane...and the hover about at 39,000 feet waiting for the plane to get as high as me. After a few days of heavy eating with the aid of the Young (well... not quite so young) Deborah's fine knowledge of Houstons eating establishments..... we found the young Jeremy and the young (yea whatever) Deborah....falling out of bed at 4.30 am to catch the early morning flight from Houston to Denver in order to start the next leg (1 show) of our Sting travels. After a bumpy....flight we arrived at the nice new Denver international airport clutching out stomachs . After renting an appalling brown and biege Chevy Cavalier.... we were taken by mini bus to the parking lot where they keep such things only for the litle Jeremy to see a nice shiny Acura NSX rocket thingy sitting in the corner of the lot. After a long deliberation with Debs( 3.1 seconds) and the passing over of $300 for the day... the band of merry hopefuls set off on the journey to Red rocks.
We arrived at the Red Rocks Park around 4 o clock and had a nice wee walk around (as you do...) and waited for the concert festivities to begin.
The venue is really stunning... the U2 under a blood red Sky doesn't do it justice at all. Sat and talked to kipper and Jason for a little while (Yes Fred... mission is more or less accomplished) and also to various other people of interest including Pecos, Nikki, Dan the security guard, Becky and a few others...and then it was time for the show...
Opening Act :KD Lang was absolutely wonderful, voice excellent, songs excellent, talked loads, and really just has a nice soul..... and then after rigging thy gear it was........ rummmble.....rumble....... rumble...rumble....with a few Kipper noises added for good measure.
Setlist * Crowd stood from beginning to end...
Sting joked that he should be playing Blowing in the wind as it was well windy
Nothing of note to add, the venue was really what made the gig what it was. The shows are now tired, it is stale, the reviews are getting to be consistently bad, the prices out of hand....I had a look to see if I could find other artists charging Sting prices...and didnt find any.... starting to get annoyed with it all....
Well I go back to England for around 2 weeks and then am back out here again for the Irvine Meadows, Vegas, Phoenix, Houstom, Austin, Pelham shows and then... taking a break before South Africa and Tokyo..... if it were not for LAS, LFB,LJG,LMG,LJB,LBB, these shows would be dull as hell....
Dare I tell the story of how I MET STING! after all the Compaq bashing lately?
I am a little hesitant to tell everyone about my experience but since I have enjoyed everyone else's stories I can only hope that you will find some enjoyment in mine. Here goes:
Two weeks ago my husband received an invitation from Compaq to attend the 'meet and greet' prior to the Red Rocks show. I nearly fainted when he told me and haven't been able to think straight since! I held off telling anyone because I didn't want to jinx this meeting.
So, the day of the concert arrives. We hit so much traffic going into Red Rocks Park that we thought for sure we would miss out meeting with Sting. We had been given very cool looking VIP passes by Compaq and were let into the North Tower next to the stage and...there we were! Backstage! I have never been backstage at any concert so to be here at a Sting concert was beyond my wildest dreams! We were directed up the iron stairs to the room on the top floor, which was very hot since it had been at least 92 degrees that afternoon at Red Rocks. It was very nicely laid out and fully catered by Compaq. We had a great view of the backstage goings on from a huge open window. We watched the back of KD Lang while she performed. At about 8:15 we were given our Compaq goody bag (which consisted of a black nylon jacket and black hat with sting.compaq.com embroidered in red and the BND CD) and then escorted downstairs to the 'meet and greet' room. If you go to the Red Rocks website (red-
rocks.com) you can see a 360 degree view of this room where one wall is all red rock - very beautiful). When Sting walked into the room the woman standing closest to him looked like he had scared the living daylights out of her and she started to run away. It was so funny. Then eveyone started to clap and I, of course, let out a whopping "whoo" (spelling?). Then we all lined up for pictures. Oh I forgot to tell you that I had bought a dozen roses to give to Sting so when it was our turn for pictures I had the roses to present to him. He looked surprised and said, "thank you" and gave me a wonderful kiss on the cheek. He then put his arms around my husband and I for the picture. Very cute.
When everyone had had their picture taken, Sting stood there by himself and said, "Well, anyone else?" and I of course had to come rushing back for one more picture with just the two of us with our arms around each other {{sigh}}. Then he bowed to the group while we clapped and it was all over. I with it could have lasted longer but I'm grateful for the moment.
We were then escorted out and went over to our seats in the 4th row almost center. Phenomenal! I thoroughly enjoyed watching the wind blowing through Sting's hair. I thought it was one of the best shows I had ever seen but that was probably due to the circumstances and the seats. Now, for those of you who have ranted in the past...I can attest to the fact that not all "Compaq types" just sit there (since I was standing the whole time) and they don't all "blab loudly" during the quiet songs (since I was singing through every song)! Jeremy, I'm sorry that you found some of the "Compaq types" offensive but I watched quite a few of them "pound down a few" backstage. Not that I'm defending them but one or two shouldn't ruin your feelings for the rest of us. Also, I saw plenty of non-Compaq people without VIP passes sitting and talking.
I have been waiting 20 years for this moment so please forgive my lengthy story. I hope you have enjoyed it! Thank you.
As expected, the concert was breathtaking. Sting was singing his heart out. I don't even have to comment on his bass playing. He definitely was the most enthusiastic player in the band. The most amazing thing for me was his voice. I thought his throat would be a little tired by now and the altitude at Red Rocks wouldn't help either. But he sounded awesome. This was the fifth time I've seen him at Red Rocks and this was the most impressive. He got a little carried away during the When The World Is Going Down solo when was humping his bass nonstop. I was at third row and still could not hear a thing whenever he turned his back. All you could hear were the women (and I must say some men, too) screaming their lungs out at the sight of Sting's moving butt!
At the end of the show, Sting came over to our side (Dominic's), and this lucky lady in front of me held Sting's head with one arm and stuck his mouth to hers! I witnessed a 4 second HUUUGE French kiss right in front of my eyes. The Channel 4 Newsday was next to me and she was debating whether or not to interview her. Was she from the list?
Oh well, I had such a great time. Jeremy, I couldn't find you in the 5th row. I will be at the Santa Barbara show and all the Greek Shows. Please get back with me and let me know if you'll be there.
